Smithfield, RI - The UMBC men's lacrosse team had their season come to an end as the second-seeded Retrievers dropped a 9-7 decision against the third-seeded UAlbany Great Danes in the America East semifinals on Thursday evening at Bryant University.

UAlbany (8-8) then capitalized after a turnover to even the score as Ben Wimmer converted off an assist by Ryan Doherty with eight minutes left.
After another UMBC turnover, Wimmer gave UAlbany their first lead of the game with just 5:49 remaining. Silas Richmond, the 2025 Attackman of the Year, found Wimmer alone in front of the net, and he finished from point-blank range.
UAlbany got an insurance tally with 3:17 remaining as Richmond found Koleton Marquis to make it 9-7.
The Retrievers could only manage one more possession for the remainder of the game, as they committed a turnover and were called for a penalty.
UMBC jumped out to a 3-0 lead over the first 4:33 of the contest, with
Nick Gutierrez, Galloway, and Chick all scoring unassisted goals.
Richmond (three goals, two assists) scored two goals late in the opening quarter to trim UAlbany's deficit to 3-2 after the first 15 minutes.
UMBC held a 6-3 advantage with 3:47 left in the opening half after
Josh Tang beat the shot clock with a great individual play. However, The Great Danes carried the momentum into intermission after scoring two goals in the final 27 seconds to cut the lead to 6-5 at the break.
There was only one goal scored in the third quarter as both defenses stood firm. UAlbany evened the score at 6-6 with 11:15 left in the stanza after Doherty scored off a feed from James Reid.
The Retrievers ended their 23-minute scoring drought to re-claim the lead on Galloway's early fourth-quarter tally, but the Great Danes closed the door the rest of the way.
Both goalies were sensational as they combined for 23 saves. UMBC's
Connor McMahon, the America East Goalie of the Year, stopped a career-high 14 shots and added a caused turnover. Brady Smith made nine saves for UAlbany.
Second Team All-Conference defender
Dante Marinello caused a team-high four turnovers and added three ground balls for the Retrievers.
UAlbany will take on top-seeded Bryant in the America East championship game on Saturday afternoon.
