Retriever Notes

UMBC (1-1) makes the short trip to Towson (3-2) for a contest versus the Tigers on Saturday, March 2. The opening face-off is set for noon and the game will be streamed on FloSports ($).

RETRIEVER RECAP

  • UMBC senior attackman Brian Tregoning (6g) and Mike Doughty (2g, 5a) enjoyed career games as the Retrievers outscored host Mount St. Mary's, 11-1, over the final 19 minutes and triumphed, 18-6 at Waldron Family Stadium on Feb. 24.
  • The Retrievers evened their record at 1-1 on the young season.
  • Senior attackman Mateo Brown (3g, 1a) tallied his sixth career three-goal game, while junior midfielder Jordan Galloway (2g, 1a) and junior midfielder Josh Tang (1g, 2a) also recorded 3-point games in Emmitsburg.

OTHER NOTES

  • The America East Conference named Tregoning as its Offensive Player of the Week for his efforts at Mount St. Mary's on Feb. 24.
  • Tregoning's six-goal effort in Emmitsburg was the program's first in four seasons. UMBC's last six-goal effort was turned in by Ryan Frawley versus High Point on March 7, 2020. Through two games, he (7-1-8) is tied for 15th nationally with 3.5 goals per contest.
  • Mike Doughty averages more than one assist per game (45a/33gp) in his Retriever career. He just hit the 75-point mark (33-45-78) after his seven-point effort at The Mount. He needs five assists to become UMBC's first player to reach 50 since Max Maxwell (66 career assists) achieved the mark in 2016.
  • The elder Doughty brother (2-9-11) is ranked second in the nation with 4.5 assists per contest.
  • Senior face-off specialist Zach Dudley won 15-of-23 face offs and has moved into sixth place on UMBC's all-time leaderboard with 284 draws won. He is tied for 19th nationally with a face-off winning percentage of 59.6.
  • In the final 1:43 at the Mount, sophomore Connor Chick (EMO) and junior Tyler Barnett tallied their first collegiate goals.
  • UMBC enters the week tied for seventh nationally, allowing 8.5 goals per game.
  • The Retrievers finished the campaign ranked fifth nationally in scoring defense, allowing 9.62 goals per game. In 2022, UMBC completed the campaign ninth nationally in scoring defense, allowing 10.08 goals per game.  UMBC led the nation in 2018, allowing only 7.77 goals per game. In Head Coach Ryan Moran's 44 contests versus America East competition, UMBC has allowed single digit goals on 24 occasions.

Goals Allowed Per Game National Rank

  • The Retrievers scored four man-up goals (in five opportunities) at the Mount, recording four in a game in back-to-back seasons (Bryant, 2023). Prior to 2023, UMBC had not scored as many as four in a game since April 12, 2014 versus Hartford.
  • UMBC has two sets of brothers on the 2024 team – Kevin and Mike Doughty and Dane and Noah Hall. The Halls become the 36th brother combination to compete for UMBC.
  • Head Coach Ryan Moran enters his eighth season at the helm of the Retrievers. He earned America East Conference Coach of the Year honors in 2021 after leading the squad to a share of the regular season title. He has led the Retrievers to the league playoffs in five of the seven full years of competition. As the No. 4 seed, Moran piloted the 2019 team to an America East title and a NCAA Tournament win over Marist.  Moran is 45-42 overall and 22-17 in America East play.
  • The UMBC men's lacrosse program has selected seniors Mike Doughty, Kyle Hoff and Brian Tregoning as its team captains for the 2024 spring campaign. Hoff and Tregoning will reprise their captain's roles from a season ago, while Doughty makes his debut as one of the team's leaders.
  • UMBC's first five contests are within the confines of the state of Maryland. They don't leave "The Free State" until a March 23 first-time encounter at AE associate member Merrimack.
A LOOK AT THE TIGERS

  • Towson is 3-2 and coming off an 11-10 overtime loss at Loyola Maryland on Tuesday.
  • Graduate student attackman Nick Demaio led a balanced effort with two goals and two assists, while junior FO Nick Constantinides won 12-of-19 face offs.
  • The Tigers entered the week receiving votes in both the USILA and media polls and riding a three-game winning streak.
  • Demaio leads TU with 12 goals and 10 assists through five games and Nick Constantinides is winning 57.8 percent of his draws taken.
  • Junior goalkeeper Luke Downs was ranked second in the country in goals against average entering play this week and is now at an 8.09 GAA.

SERIES NOTES
  • This will be the 53rd meeting between UMBC and Towson and the Tigers lead the all-time series, 37-17.
  • The Retriever defense allowed only two goals through the first 47 minutes as UMBC defeated TU, 8-4, on March 5 of last season.
  • Nick Gutierrez scored twice for UMBC, while the Retriever defense caused 9 of Towson's 26 turnovers.
  • UMBC has dropped eight straight at Towson, dating back to a 10-9 win in 2003. Six of the eight losses have occurred by three goals or less, including the 11-10 decision in 2022.
