Game Recap: Baseball |

Baseball Falls in Season-Opener at Santa Clara

Santa Clara, Calif. – Leewood Molessa drove in a run, went 2-for-3 and reached base four times as the UMBC Baseball team opened the 2024 season with a 13-4 loss at Santa Clara

Anthony Swenda also had a pair of hits, while also driving in and scored a run for the Retrievers

How it Happened:
  • UMBC took an early lead when Justin Taylor singled up the middle to start the game followed by Swenda and Molessa walking to load the bases
  • Taylor then scored on a passed ball followed by Swenda scoring on a Luke Trythall RBI groundout
  • The Broncos got one back in the bottom half of the inning, but Luke Johnson stranded the potential tying run in scoring position to end the threat
  • Freshman catcher Nick Pratt doubled in his first career at-bat and scored on a Swenda RBI single.
  • Molessa followed with an RBI single to score Jayden Shertel, who walked earlier in the inning, to make it 4-1 in the second
  • Johnson struck out the side in the second and worked a perfect third
  • Santa Clara would halve the lead in the fourth, but got a pop out to strand two in scoring position
  • The hosts chased Johnson in the bottom of the fifth after a leadoff walk, and error and an RBI single made it 4-3 with a runner on.
  • The inherited runner would score as the Broncos came out of the inning up 6-4, and never looked back
  • Johnson finished with six strikeout in four-plus innings of work
  • Zach Kelly worked a scoreless inning out of the bullpen in his UMBC debut
  • Matt Ryan also picked up a hit in the contest
Game two of the series begins at 4 p.m. EST on Saturday
