Men's Hoops Falls In Heartbreaking Fashion in Overtime at Marist

Johnson Pours in Game-High 23 Points

Box Score

Poughkeepsie, NY - Senior guard Bryce Johnson scored a game-high 23 points. However, the UMBC men's basketball team dropped a heartbreaking 76-73 overtime decision against the Marist Red Foxes on Saturday afternoon at McCann Arena.

Johnson connected on 8-of-13 field goal attempts and contributed four assists and a season-high seven rebounds. Senior guard Marcus Banks Jr. was also in double-figures with 15 points (5-of-14, 3-pointers). Graduate student forward Josh Odunowo recorded eight points and grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds.

Clinging to a 71-70 lead, UMBC (7-7) was called for a controversial foul with just one second remaining in regulation, which allowed the Red Foxes (8-2) to force overtime by making one of two free throw attempts.

The Retrievers then held a 73-70 advantage after senior guard Marlon Short converted a layup with 3:40 left in the extra session. However, UMBC was unable to score the rest of the way. Jadin Collins-Roberts scored on a second chance opportunity with 2:27 left to give Marist the lead for good.

Trailing 74-73, UMBC misfired on their final five field goal attempts before Elijah Lewis (team-high 17 points) made two free throws to give the Red Foxes a 76-73 edge with ten ticks left. The Retrievers had a final opportunity to force another overtime, but Banks Jr. had his 3-pointer blocked with two seconds left by Lewis, and time ran out.

UMBC held a 37-27 edge with 4:36 left in the opening half, but Marist went on a 12-2 run to even the game, 39-39, at the intermission. The Retrievers connected on 7-of-13 treys in the first stanza as Banks Jr. and junior forward Louie Jordan each buried three triples. Johnson recorded 12 points on 5-of-6 shooting over the first twenty minutes of the contest.

The Retrievers led for 24:15 of the contest while the Red Foxes were ahead for 15:19. The game was deadlocked ten times and there were 12 lead changes.

UMBC shot 41 percent overall (26-of-61) and were 12-of-29 (41.4 percent) from behind the arc while the hosts went 29-of-64 overall (45.3 percent) and just 18.8 percent (3-for-16) from deep.

The Retrievers travel to American on Sunday, December 29.
