Men’s Swimming & Diving Defeats VMI and Saint Peter’s

BALTIMORE – The UMBC Men's Swimming & Diving team returned to the pool in style as it defeated both VMI and Saint Peter's on Saturday at the UMBC Aquatic Complex.

The Retrievers defeated VMI 178-121 and beat Saint Peter's 239-54.

The program celebrated Faculty Appreciation Day by welcoming their favorite professors for a pool deck ceremony prior to the meet. Dr. Conor Donnan (American Studies), C. NaTasha Richburg (Information Systems), Guenet Abraham (Visual Arts) and Dr.Pamela Rakshan Rouhakhtar (Psychology) were all honored.

"Great job today in the pool followed by a few amazing weeks of training," said head coach Matt Donovan. "The real stars of the day were the professors that we had the honor to recognize before the meet.  They are the reason there is the Student in Student-Athlete. We are so proud to dedicate our success in the pool to them and the countless hours they put in to make the UMBC community the success that it is."

The meet started off well as UMBC's 200 Medley Relay team of Ryan Harding, Christian Coleman, Oliver Gassmann and Bode Neale took gold in 1:33.33.

Eric Kim (57.61) and Thyn Van Lier) took the top two spots in the 100 Breaststroke, while Max Casey-Bolanos erased a two second deficit in the final 50 yards to win the 200 Fly in 1:56.93.

Harding then won the 50 Free in 21.35, followed by Boris Milev taking gold in the 100 Free in 46.45.

Kim (2:08.06) and Max Trias (2:11.53) took the top two spots in the 200 Breaststroke, before Trias (1:57.60), Milev (1:57.62) and James Tao swept the podium in the 200 IM.

Milev then was the anchor leg in the 400 Free Relay as he chased down the VMI leaders and out-touched them at the wall in 3:07.86 to give him, Harding, Gassmann and Neale the victory to close out the meet.

Isaac Poole once again swept the diving competition, winning gold in both the 1 Meter (335.25) and 3 Meter (272.03). Andy Vines, Anders Logas and Kaleb Cave took spots 2-4 in the 1 Meter, while Logas, Vines, Grant Moore and Cave went 2-5 in the 3 Meter.

The Retrievers have a week off before a three day meet at Bucknell
