SETTING THE STAGEÂ Â
- UMBC opened their 57th season against Penn State York last Monday. This is the 39th season of DI hoops for the Black and Gold.
- In season openers, UMBC now holds a 16-22 mark in DI play.
- UMBC is 15-28 all-time against the Eagles.
- The Retrievers dropped an 89-70 decision against the Coppin State Eagles last year at the Physical Education Complex. Sophomore guard Dion Brown paced the Retrievers in scoring with 18 points on 8-of-15 shooting while freshman guard Franck Emmou and junior guard Bryce Johnson added 11 points each.
COPPIN UPDATE
- Derrius Ward was named the MEAC Defensive Player of the Week on Tuesday morning. This is the first weekly award that Ward has received in his time with the Eagles. Playing in three games in the opening week, Ward averaged 15.3 points and 5.0 rebounds to go with three steals and a pair of blocks. A redshirt senior from Philadelphia, Pa., Ward scored a team-high 19 points with five rebounds and three steals in his CSU debut at Wake Forest. He followed with nine points, four rebounds and a block at High Point before going for 18 points, six rebounds and a block against Rider.At Virginia, Ward just missed out on a double-double, recording 12 points, nine rebounds and two steals. For the season, Ward leads Coppin in both points (14.5) and rebounds (6.0).
- The Eagles have been outscored by a an average of 70.8 to 49.5 over their first four contests.
- Ward leads the squad in scoring (14.5 ppg) and rebounding (6.0 per game).
LAST TIME OUT
- The host UMBC men's basketball team scored the first 20 points of the contest and cruised to a 120-61 victory against the Valley Forge Patriots on Monday evening at Chesapeake Employers Insurance Arena.
- Â The point total ties the second-most points in a single game in program history (The Citadel, 2016). The Retrievers scored 134 against Valley Forge during the 2019-20 campaign.
- Â UMBC swished 17-of-35 triples in the contest, just two shy of a program record. Junior forward Louie Jordan (career-high 22 points) drilled his first four attempts from behind the arc and finished 6-of-8 in the contest. Bryce Johnson scored a game-high 23 points and was 9-of-14 from the floor.
- Â Graduate student forward Josh Odunowo (12 points, 5 boards), senior JC Harris (career-high 12 points), and senior Devan Sapp (11 points) were also in double-figures.
- Â Senior guard Marcus Banks Jr. tied a career-best with 10 caroms, and added five assists, while senior guard Marlon Short dished a UMBC career-high six assists in a starting role.
- Â UMBC scored 60 points in each half and finished 48-of-81 overall from the floor for a 59.3 percent rate. The Retrievers dominated the paint as they were a +30 on the boards (55-25) and outscored the visitors by a 60-28 count in the paint. The Dawgs also forced 31 turnovers and held the Patriots to a 34.9 percent clip (22-for-63) from the floor.
- Â Guards Yasir Rowell and Zay Dillingham each scored 18 points to pace Valley Forge (2-1.
 BOMBS AWAY
- UMBC leads the AE with 11.7 3-point fgs made per game this season.
- The Retrievers are second in the league in field goal percentage (.402).
- Louie Jordan leads the league with 3.3 treys per game and Marcus Banks Jr. is 5th (2.2 per game).
- Jordan is also second in percentage at .588 (10-for-17).
A PROGRAM ON THR RISE
- UMBC is enjoying their best stretch in program history as the Retrievers have gone a combined 147-110 (.614) over the past eight seasons. UMBC enjoyed three straight 20+ win seasons from 2016-17 to 2018-19. Their 25 victories in 2017-18 was a program high.
- UMBC became the first #16 seed to knock off a #1 seed when the Retrievers shocked Virginia, 74-54, in the 2018 NCAA Tournament.
- Chesapeake Employers Insurance Arena (formerly the UMBC Event Center) officially opened on Feb. 3, 2018, as the UMBC men's basketball team hosted the Vermont Catamounts before a capacity crowd of 4,753. Both the men's and women's basketball teams played their February and March games in the new facility, which included three post-season victories.
- The on-campus facility can accommodate nearly 6,000 patrons for commencements, concerts, featured speakers, and other events. It includes spectator facilities, such as concessions, catering, hospitality, restrooms, security and guest services.
 COACH FERRY
- Jim Ferry is in his 23rd season as a collegiate head coach and his third at UMBC.
- Ferry led the Retrievers to consecutive 18-14 records as well as an appearance in the America East Finals in 2021-22.
- Prior to his arrival in Baltimore, Ferry served in 2020-21 as the interim head coach at Penn State. He led the Nittany Lions to an 11-14 overall mark and a
- 7-12 Big Ten record that included wins over NCAA Tournament
- teams No. 14 Wisconsin, No. 15 Virginia Tech , Rutgers, and Maryland (twice).
- Ferry spent 10 seasons as head coach at LIU Brooklyn, guiding the program to unprecedented levels of success. He led the Blackbirds to the Northeast Conference regular-season titles and tournament championships in 2011 and 2012, including their first NCAA Championship appearance in 14 years.

Helped lead the squad to the Region V Semifinals last season and was named to the Region V All-Tournament Team…Scored 34 points in a double-overtime game against Clarendon and splashed seven treys in the contest.
