Swimming & Diving Heads to Navy for Saturday Tri-Meet

The UMBC Swimming & Diving hits the road for the first time this season when it travels to Navy for a Saturday morning tri-meet with the Midshipmen and William & Mary. The action gets underway at 11 a.m.

Last time out, both UMBC squads came out victorious in the season opening meet against American. The Womwn defeated visiting American 178-120 on Saturday at the UMBC Aquatic Complex.

Ember Stennett led the divers as she won the 1 meter (255.00) and 3 meter (238.58). For her performance, Stennett was named the America East Diver of the Week.

Alicia Buteau, Joella Mills and Isabella Evers took second through fourth in the 1 meter. Evers and Buteau finished second and third in the 3 meter.

The meet started off with a bang as Ashley Gutshall, Elze Bielskute, Nicol Davanzo and Makaela Hill won the 200 Medley Relay

Bruna de Padua blew away the competition to take gold in both the 500 free and 1000 free, and freshman Claire Oettinger started her career off with a win in the 200 free.

Ashley Gutshall continued the winning ways for UMBC by winning the 100 back, followed by Bielskute finishing first in the 100 breast 

Ellie Taragano made a late push to take first in the 200 back, while Breanna Smith won the 200 breaststroke in her college debut.

Davanzo continued the winning ways for the Retrievers with a first place finish in the 100 fly.

de Padua, Oettinger, Gutshall and Hill closed the meet by taking gold in the 400 free relay.

The Men raced past the Eagles by a score of 208.50-91.50.

Isaac Poole had a pair of NCAA Zone Cuts as he won both the 1 meter (311.78) and the 3 meter (339.08). Kaleb Cave and Grant Moore took second and third in both diving events, as well. Poole was named America East Diver of the Week, while Cave earned America East Rookie of the Week honors. 

UMBC got off to a hot start as Marko Kovacic, Christian Coleman, Oliver Gassmann and Bode Neale took first in the 200 Medley Relay

Graduate student Boris Milev won the 200 free in his Retriever debut and followed by gold in the 100 and 50 free, while classmate Ryan Harding took first in the 100 back.

Kovacic then picked up another pair of wins as he finished first in the 100 fly and 200 fly, and Nick Bracall topped the podium in the 200 back  

James Tao, Max Trias, Eric Kim and Matthew Johnson then took the top 4 spots for UMBC in the 200 Breaststroke.

UMBC closed the race by taking gold in the 400 relay as Jayden Atkins, Chris Coleman, Sean Neils and Andrew McEachern finished first.

Scouting Navy: 

The Mids Women's team dropped a 158-142 decision to Penn State last weekend in the first official competition of the year for the team.  

Navy won six of the first 10 events of the day to take a slim lead into the second half of the meet, but Penn State won four of the remaining six events to emerge with the close victory.

Ela Habjan (100 back, 200 back) and Caroline Irwin (50 free, 10 fly) each won a pair of swimming events and Mackenzie Kim swept the two diving boards.  Additionally, Lauren Walsh won the 100 breaststroke event and the Mids won the 200 medley relay.

Irwin was named the Patriot League Swimmer of the Week and Kim won the league's diver-of-the-week accolade for their efforts.

Navy's Men's team regular season began last weekend when it lost a 172-158 meet to Penn State.

The Mids totaled six victories during the meet, with Dean Jones (1000 free), Everet Andrew (200 free), Juan Mora (100 breast), Ben Irwin (200 back) and Blakeman Shaw (one-meter diving) earning individual event wins.  Navy also won the 200 medley relay event.

Irwin was named this week's swimmer of the week in the league and Shaw was recognized as the men's diver of the week.

Scouting William & Mary:

The Tribe Women opened their season by registering victories over fellow Coastal Athletic Association-foes Delaware (156-137) and UNCW (160-133) and losing to George Washington (151.5-141.5).

William & Mary put together a 7-1 record last season and placed third at the conference championship.

William & Mary's Men's season began with the team losing to Delaware (218-75), UNCW (216.5-70.5) and George Washington (216-77) last weekend.

The Tribe posted a 2-4 record during the 2023-24 season.  William & Mary finished in fifth place at the 2024 Coastal Athletic Conference Championship.
