Men's Basketball Seeks Second Straight America East Win; Host UNH on Saturday Afternoon

  • The host Retrievers won their first America East Conference contest of the season as UMBC edged the Maine Black Bears, 70-65, on Thursday evening at Chesapeake Employers Insurance Arena. 
  • UMBC sophomore Dion Brown reached 20 points for the eighth team this season as the guard scored a game-high 21 points on 9-of-12 shooting. Junior guard Marcus Banks Jr. added 18 points and freshman guard Ace Valentine tied his season-best with 15 points. Graduate student forward Max Lorca-Lloyd filled the stat sheet with seven points, seven rebounds, four blocks and a career-high five assists. 
  • The Retrievers were without the services of graduate student forward Khydarius Smith and junior guard Bryce Johnson due to injuries.
  • UMBC has now used eight different starting lineups this season.

WHO'S HOT

  • Brown has already recorded 20 or more points eight times this season and is 4th in the America East in scoring at 17.2 ppg., 11th in fg percentage (.494) and 7th in rebounding (6.4 pg.). His 133 total field goals leads the circuit and he ranks 17th in the nation in the category. Brown is also just one of three players in the league who rank among the Top-10 in the league in scoring and rebounding. Brown is just three points shy of 500 for his career.
  • Junior guard Devan Sapp has had the touch from long-range in his second season in Baltimore. Sapp, who made just 8-of-29 (.276) treys in his initial season last year, is 28-for-61 (.459 percent) from distance and is 15th in the league with 1.5 3s per game. He's made six of his last nine from behind the arc.
  • Banks, Jr. is 3rd in the conference with 2.4 3-pt field goals per game and is 4th in 3-pt percentage at .369 percent. Banks has averaged 17.3 ppg. during America East play and has hit 13-of-34 treys (.382 percent). He drilled a career-high six triples at Vermont.
  • Graduate student forward Max Lorca-Lloyd is second in the America East with 2.0 blocks per game and ranks 35th in the country. He's averaging 6.3 ppg. and 7.0 rebounds since filling in for the injured Khydarius Smith in the starting lineup.
  • Valentine has tied his season-high with 15 points in back-to-back games and has averaged 9.5 ppg. in America East play. He's 18-for-30 (.600) from the floor over his last five contests.

A GLANCE AT THE WILDCATS

  • Junior guard Ahmad Robinson led UNH with 18 points in as the Wildcats downed the NJIT Highlanders 70-62 from Joel & Diane Bloom Wellness and Events Center Thursday evening. Sophomore guard Christian Moore shot 100% from the field and beyond the arc, sinking four shots from the field and three from beyond the arc for 11 points. Grad student forward Jaxson Baker collected nine rebounds for the Wildcats along with 11 points.
  • Forward Clarence Daniels, a First Team All-Conference pick last season, leads the America East in scoring (20.1 ppg.) and is second in rebounding (9.0 pg.)
  • Guard Ahmad Robinson is 5th in the league in scoring (15.8 pg.) and is second in assists (5.3 pg.). Robinson is a transfer from Western Texas College.
  • UNH finished third in the conference last year and were predicted to finish 8th this season.
