Box Score BALTIMORE, MD – The UMBC women's soccer team fell to the High Point Panthers, 1-0, in a game that was delayed forty minutes due to lightning in the area.
The visitors threatened the entire game and finally broke through on a penalty kick in the 60
th minute for the lone score of the evening.
Junior forward Lilly Neubauer was taken down in the box by Retriever sophomore back
Ava Schreiber to set up the game-winner. Senior midfielder Fain Buete then calmly stepped up to the line and beat UMBC junior goalkeeper
Abbey Cowles with a low shot into the left-corner of the net.
Cowles kept the Retrievers in the game all night as she tied her season-high (Drexel) with nine saves, including a diving stop to thwart graduate forward Tessa Carlin with 17:10 left in the opening half.
UMBC (2-5-0) had the first quality chance of the evening just 3:45 into the match as freshman defender
Reagan Casper sent a dangerous cross into the box for forward
Meghan McKye. McKye put a header on target, but High Point keeper Eilyn Casper made a diving save to prevent the marker.
The Retrievers nearly stunned the visitors with just 12 ticks left in the opening half when junior back
Lauren Reid sent a 35-yard blast towards the top of the goal, however, Casper (5 saves) got just enough of the ball to re-direct the attempt off the center of the crossbar.
The Dawgs had one final opportunity with 7:25 remaining in the game as senior forward
Natasha Munro drilled a 30-yard attempt just over the crossbar.
High Point (2-2-3) attempted 24 shots and held the hosts to just six opportunities.
UMBC will host Navy on Sunday at 12:00 p.m.
