Women's Soccer Resumes America East Slate on Sunday at Binghamton

RETRIEVER BYTES

- Natasha Munro and Cheyenne Payne each scored in the second half as the UMBC Women's Soccer team closed out non-conference play with a 2-0 victory over visiting Iona on Thursday night at Retriever Soccer Park.
- Sara Gavagan made three saves as she picked up a shutout in her first career start.
- UMBC held a 20-4 shot advantage, 13-3 edge in shots on goal, and had six corners to Iona's one.
- Last Sunday, UMBC dominated the second half and was able to pick up an important 2-2 draw against the Bryant Bulldogs, in the America East season-opener for both squads at Retriever Soccer Park.
 - The Retrievers, who fell behind by two goals in the first half, received goals from senior forward Meghan McKye and graduate student forward Natasha Munro to pick up a point in the conference standings. Graduate student midfielder Lola Negrete assisted on both goals, including the equalizer on a corner kick with just over eight minutes left in the match.
- The "Rick Stainton Era" began with a bang as the UMBC women's soccer team blanked Kutztown, 2-0, in the season-opener at Retriever Soccer Park on Aug. 17.
 - Freshman forward Payton Schenning, Maryland's 2022 Gatorade Girls Player of the Year, headed in the game-winner just two minutes into her career off a gorgeous corner kick into the box from graduate student Lola Negrete.  The Retrievers got an insurance marker in the '70 when freshman striker Cheyenne Payne tapped in a feed from junior midfielder Bella Roppolo from five yards out.
 - McKye is 10th in the America East with seven points (3 goals, 1 assist) thus far in 2023.
- Negrete is 4th on the circuit in assists per game (.273). In addition, she's 15th in the conference with 0.82 shots on goal per game and is 15th in total shots (1.82 pg.)
 - Junior Izzy Binko is 17th in total shots (1.64 pg.)
 - Junior goalkeeper Abbey Cowles leads the America East with 5.80 saves per game.

A GLANCE AT THE BEARCATS
- Binghamton is coming off an impressive road victory as they knocked off New Hampshire in their conference-opener, 1-0, last Sunday in Durham. Lauren Clark's tally in the 32nd minute held up as goalkeeper Kaitlyn Williams turned aside seven shots en route to the shutout.
-In their prior contest on Sept. 13, The Bearcats came up with a 2-2 draw at Cornell. The Bearcats got the equalizer in the 78' as Paige Luke scored on a header in the center of the box. Lexi Vegoda recorded a goal and an assist.
- Vegoda leads the squad with 8 points (3 goals, 2 assists) while Luke and Clark have each scored a pair of goals
- Williams has started all nine games in net and owns a 1.35 goals against average along with a .760 save percentage. Williams was named the America Defensive Player of the Week this past Monday for the second time in her career.

INSIDE THE SERIES
-Binghamton is 17-2-3 in the all-time series and has won six straight against the Retrievers.
-UMBC's last win in Vestal occurred on Oct. 3, 2013, as they defeated the Bearcats 1-0 in double-overtime. Alexa Quaranta scored 6:47 in the second sudden-death period. Lauren Kadet recorded five saves to record the win in goal.
- Last season, Binghamton blanked the Retrievers, 5-0, on the final day of the regular-season at Retriever Soccer Park. UMBC played shorthanded for nearly the entire contest after a red card just two minutes in. The Bearcats scored four times in the opening half and outshot the Dawgs by a 33-6 margin in the match.
