Men's Soccer Welcomes No. 16/25 Cornell on Saturday Evening

Saturday is "Greek Night" at Retriever Soccer Park

BALTIMORE –The schedule continues to ramp up for the UMBC men's soccer team.
 
Four days after taking on the two-time defending CAA champion Hofstra Pride on Long Island, the Retrievers (3-1-1) host another 2022 NCAA Tournament participant when the Cornell Big Red (2-1-0) invade Retriever Soccer Park.
 
The first-time ever meeting between UMBC and Cornell takes place on Saturday, Sept. 16 and the opening kick-off is set for 7:00 p.m. The contest will be broadcast on ESPN+ with Paul Mittermeier on the call.

BREAKING NEWS:
  • UMBC played with 10 men for the final 83 minutes of action and fell to two-time defending CAA champion Hofstra, 2-0, at Hofstra Soccer Stadium on Tuesday evening. The Retrievers dropped their first contest of the year and fell to 3-1-1.
  • Senior forward Taylor Calheira leads the team with four goals and one assist through five games. Classmates Alek Wroblewski and Loc San have two goals apiece, while Jago Lott, Robbie Ryerson and Ty Stroud have all contributed a pair of assists. 
  • Returning from injury, Ismailcan Usta and Karl Quist-Therson made their first appearances of the season and freshman Giuseppe Indelicato earned his first minutes of playing time in a UMBC uniform. After missing a pair of games, graduate student Jordan Ehart returned to the starting lineup at Hofstra.
  • The Retrievers remain ranked No. 3 in the Northeast Region (United Soccer Coaches, games through Sept. 12), behind America East rivals Vermont and New Hampshire.
 
A GLANCE AT THE BIG RED          
  • Cornell has earned a national ranking of No. 25 by United Soccer Coaches after getting off to a 2-1-0 start. They are ranked No. 16 by College Soccer News
  • UMBC will be the third America East team that Cornell plays in 2023. They opened with a 1-0 loss at No. 22 Vermont, then defeated No. 19 UNH, 1-0, in Durham.
  • The Big Red scored the first four goals of the game and held off Canisius, 4-2, in Buffalo on Sept. 9. Alex Harris scored goals in the 21' and 25' and assisted on Adam Schaban's goal in the 45'.
  • Goalkeeper Ryan Friedberg has allowed only three goals in three contests and has made 13 saves.

  • This will be the first meeting between UMBC and Cornell.
