Men's Lacrosse Hosts UMass Lowell on Saturday in First of Back-to-Back League Home Contests

Brian Tregoning scored four goals in the win at UML in 2022.

The UMBC men's lacrosse team (6-3, 1-2 America East) plays the first of back-to-back home America East contests on Saturday, April 8 when they welcome the UMass Lowell River Hawks to UMBC Stadium. The contest gets underway at noon and will be broadcast on AE.tv with Gary Stein on the call.

RETRIEVERS OF LATE
  • Host UAlbany raced out to a 7-1 lead and withstood a third quarter UMBC rally to defeat the Retrievers, 12-6, at Casey Stadium on April 1.
  • The six-goal output is a season low for UMBC and the fewest goals scored since April 2, 2022, when the Retrievers fell, 12-3 at Vermont. UMBC had scored 41 goals in the previous three contests.
  • For the seventh time in nine games, UMBC junior attackman Mateo Brown scored multiple goals, leading the visitors with a pair of scores. Junior goalkeeper Jayson Tingue saw 41 Great Dane shots and made 13 saves. Junior face-off specialist Zach Dudley won 11-of-19 draws and collected six ground balls.

WHAT BROWN CAN DO FOR YOU
  • Brown has a team-high 29 goals on the season and is 12th nationally with 3.22 goals score per game. He entered the season with one goal scored in four games played.
  • He is just the fourth player in Head Coach Ryan Moran's tenure (2017) to reach the 25-goal plateau and the other three (Ryan Frawley-46, Trevor Patschorke-33, Brett McIntyre-33) scored 33 goals or more in the championship season of 2019.
  • Brown is the fastest to reach the 29-goal mark since Nate Lewnes scored 31 goals through nine games in 2016.

NOT JUST A ONE-MAN SHOW
  • Junior A Allen Hockenberry had only appeared in two games in his two seasons at UMBC, but leads the team with a dozen assists and is second in scoring (8-12-20). He has four multiple-assist games, including three apiece versus Mercer and Merrimack.
  • Grad student attackman Brett Baucia has 13 goals to date and UMBC's active scoring leader just hit 61 career points (36-25-60).
  • In recent weeks, UMBC has been buoyed by the return of seniors Mike Doughty and Ricky Fedorchak and junior Brian Tregoning. Doughty, who missed six games after starting the opener, contributed two goals and two assists vs. Merrimack. Fedorchak made his season debut at UAlbany and caused a pair of turnovers, while Tregoning debuted in 2023 with a 1-goal, 3-assist effort vs. Mercer.
TEAM DEFENSE
  • Junior goalkeeper Jayson Tingue, who saw limited action until starting both 2022 America East playoff games, stands third in the nation with a goals against average of 8.54. He is also ranked ninth in save percentage (55.0). Tingue was one of nine men's players across the country to be added to the Tewaaraton Watch List on March 9.
  • Defensively, UMBC is ranked No. 5, allowing only 8.89 goals per game. UMBC's riding has been excellent, as opponents are only clearing at a 80.7 percent clip, ranked seventh-best in the country.

 OTHER NOTES
  • The Retrievers received votes in the USILA Coaches' Poll in four consecutive weeks in March.
  • UMBC is 5-0 at home this season and has outscored its five foes, 65-27.
  • Zach Dudley needs to win five more face-offs to become the seventh Retrievers to capture 250 in UMBC's Division I (1981) era.
  • UMBC scored four extra-man goals – all in the fourth quarter – on March 18 at Bryant. The last time the Retriever program tallied four in a game was April 2, 2014 in a 16-11 win over Hartford. Senior Ryan Johnston had three of the four man-up goals, which is tied for an individual team record. Baucia assisted on three of those four extra-man tallies versus the Bulldogs.
  • UMBC's 5-1 start tied the best six-game mark in the Retrievers' Division I history (1981) with the 1992 squad.
  • The Retrievers' 8-4 victory over Towson on March 5 was the 400th in the 55th season of intercollegiate competition (402-358).
  • The America East Conference named UMBC junior goalkeeper Jayson Tingue the Men's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week on March 6. Tingue allowed only four goals and made eight saves in back-to-back wins over St. Bonaventure (13-4) and Towson (8-4).
  • Fifth-year midfielder Taylor Bohahan, who served as a co-captain in 2022, will reprise his role in 2023, along with senior defender Ricky Fedorchak and juniors Kyle Hoff (SSDM) and Brian Tregoning (A).
  • After competing on the grass at Retriever Soccer Park in 2022, UMBC returns to the turf at UMBC Stadium this spring. UMBC Stadium now features a new press box, a fan amenities building and new walking bridge to the facility.
THE STAFF
  • Head Coach Ryan Moran enters his seventh season at the helm of the Retrievers. He earned America East Conference Coach of the Year honors in 2021 after leading the squad to a share of the regular season title. He has led the Retrievers to the league playoffs in five of the six full years of competition. As the No. 4 seed, Moran piloted the 2019 team to an America East title and a NCAA Tournament win over Marist.  Moran is 42-39 overall and 20-15 in America East play.
  • Craig Chick and Nick Griffin (volunteer) return for their second years as assistants, while Mikey Herring joined the staff last summer.

A GLANCE AT THE RIVER HAWKS
  • Under first-year Head Coach Drew Kelleher, the River Hawks have dropped their first eight games of the season.
  • Sophomore MF Riley Lawhorn scored a career high four goals in the River Hawks' 21-10 setback versus Binghamton at Cushing Stadium on April 1.
  • Lawhorn leads UML with 13 goals on the campaign, while senior midfielder Nick Harvath has added seven goals and seven assists.

 ALL-TIME SERIES
  • UMBC leads the all-time series, 5-2, and the Retrievers have won two straight games.
  • The Retrievers have won three of four meetings at UMBC Stadium, including an 11-7 victory in 2021.
  • Brian Tregoning scored four goals in last year's 11-7 victory at Cushing Stadium.
