Men's Lacrosse Hosts Vermont on Saturday's "Senior Day"

The program will honor seven student-athletes in pre-game ceremonies.

The UMBC men's lacrosse team (8-4, 3-3 America East) concludes the 2023 campaign as they host two-time defending America East champion Vermont at UMBC Stadium on Saturday, April 29. The opening face-off takes place at noon, but the pre-game Senior Day ceremonies will get underway at 11:45 a.m. The contest will be broadcast on the America East digital network with Gary Stein on the call.

HONORING RETRIEVERS OF LATE
  • Bohanan netted his first career hat trick, including the fourth quarter game-winner and insurance goals as UMBC edged NJIT, 12-10, at Lubetkin Field on April 22. Senior attackman Mike Doughty added two goals and two assists for the Retrievers, while linemate Brett Baucia added a pair of goals and one assist.
  • The win snapped a three-game road losing slide the UMBC.
HOT DAWGS

  • Baucia has now scored ten goals over the past three games and topped the 20-goal plateau (23) for the first time in his career. Baucia just reached the 75-point plateau in his career (46-29-75).
  • Senior midfielder Dane Hall tallied his second straight hat trick vs. Binghamton last Saturday and has also reached a career best with a dozen goals.
  • Sophomore M Jordan Galloway has topped his rookie performance and now has 15 goals on the campaign. He has five multiple-goal games in 2023.
  • Bohanan also has a career-high 15 goals and just played in his 50th career game at NJIT.
  • Mateo Brown is UMBC's leading scorer with 34 goals and 39 total points. He has scored a goal in every game this season and has multiple goals in and 9 of 12 games. He is the first player to reach the 34-goal mark since Ryan Frawley tallied 46 times in 2019.

 TEAM DEFENSE

  • Junior goalkeeper Jayson Tingue, who saw limited action until starting both 2022 America East playoff games, stands sixth in the nation with a goals against average of 9.24.  Tingue was one of nine men's players across the country to be added to the Tewaaraton Watch List on March 9.
  • Defensively, UMBC is ranked No. 5, allowing only 9.5 goals per game. UMBC's riding has been excellent, as opponents are only clearing at a 81.5 percent clip, ranked tenth-best in the country.

 OTHER NOTES
  • A win over Vermont would give UMBC nine (9) wins for the first time since 2009 (12-4).
  • The Retrievers received votes in the USILA Coaches' Poll in four consecutive weeks in March.
  • UMBC's 5-1 start tied the best six-game mark in the Retrievers' Division I history (1981) with the 1992 squad.
  • The Retrievers' 8-4 victory over Towson on March 5 was the 400th in the 55th season of intercollegiate competition (404-359).
  • The America East Conference named UMBC junior goalkeeper Jayson Tingue the Men's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week on March 6. Tingue allowed only four goals and made eight saves in back-to-back wins over St. Bonaventure (13-4) and Towson (8-4).
  • The America East Conference named UMBC freshman face-off specialist Alex Steers as the Men's Lacrosse Rookie of the Week on April 10, 2023. The first-year Retriever had only attempted one face-off before (vs. Mount St. Mary's on Feb. 24) winning 16-of-24 and garnering a team season-best 11 ground balls in UMBC's 15-8 victory over UMass Lowell on April 8.
  • UMBC scored four extra-man goals – all in the fourth quarter – on March 18 at Bryant. The last time the Retriever program tallied four in a game was April 2, 2014 in a 16-11 win over Hartford. Senior Ryan Johnston had three of the four man-up goals, which is tied for an individual team record. Baucia assisted on three of those four extra-man tallies versus the Bulldogs.
  • Fifth-year midfielder Taylor Bohahan, who served as a co-captain in 2022, will reprise his role in 2023, along with senior defender Ricky Fedorchak and juniors Kyle Hoff (SSDM) and Brian Tregoning (A).
  • After competing on the grass at Retriever Soccer Park in 2022, UMBC returns to the turf at UMBC Stadium this spring. UMBC Stadium now features a new press box, a fan amenities building and new walking bridge to the facility.
THE STAFF
  • Head Coach Ryan Moran enters his seventh season at the helm of the Retrievers. He earned America East Conference Coach of the Year honors in 2021 after leading the squad to a share of the regular season title. He has led the Retrievers to the league playoffs in five of the six full years of competition. As the No. 4 seed, Moran piloted the 2019 team to an America East title and a NCAA Tournament win over Marist.  Moran is 44-40 overall and 22-16 in America East play.
  • Craig Chick and Nick Griffin (volunteer) return for their second years as assistants, while Mikey Herring joined the staff last summer.
A GLANCE AT THE CATAMOUNTS
  • Vermont clinched at least a share of its third consecutive America East regular season title with a 21-3 thumping of UMass Lowell on April 22.
  • The Catamounts (8-4, 6-0 AE) have won six in a row after posting a 2-4 non-conference slate.
  • Senior face-off specialist Tommy Burke is ranked third in the country with a 63.7 percent winning percentage. As a team, Vermont is ranked ninth in face-off success (59.4).
  • Grad student goalkeeper Matt Shaffer is 11th in the nation in goals against average (10.04) and 14th in save percentage (53.1).
  • Senior attackman Brock Haley leads the offense with 29-21-50, reaching the 50-point mark for the second consecutive season.

ALL-TIME SERIES
  • UMBC leads the all-time series, 14-6, but the Catamounts won both meetings in Burlington a season ago.
  • The two teams met for the America East title for the second time in three championship seasons at Virtue Field on May 7, 2022. Vermont prevailed, 13-11, in a game which featured five ties and a pair of lead changes. Tregoning led a balanced effort with three goals, while Zach Dudley nearly battled Burke to a dead heat, winning 13 of 27 face-off attempts.
  • UMBC is 7-2 vs. Vermont at UMBC Stadium.
