Men's Lacrosse Hosts Binghamton on Saturday in Critical America East Contest

The two teams split a pair of contests in 2022.

The UMBC men's lacrosse team (7-3, 2-2 America East) hosts Binghamton (7-3, 3-1 AE) in a critical America East Conference contest on Saturday, April 15 at UMBC Stadium. The contest gets underway at 3:30 p.m. and will be broadcast on AE.tv with Gary Stein on the call.

RETRIEVERS OF LATE
  • UMBC men's lacrosse opened up an early 6-0 lead and posted a 15-8 America East victory over visiting UMass Lowell before 687 fans at UMBC Stadium on April 8.
  • Graduate student attackman Brett Baucia had a hand in seven of UMBC's goals, scoring four times and adding three assists. The seven points exceeded his previous career best of five, recorded on two occasions earlier in 2023.
  • Midfielders Dane Hall and Jordan Galloway each recorded their second career hat tricks and Hall posted his first career four-point effort. Senior attackman Mike Doughty tied his career high with four assists. Freshman face-off specialist Alex Steers, who had only attempted one draw before that game, won 16-of-24 and garnered a team season-best 11 ground balls.

WHAT BROWN CAN DO FOR YOU

  • Brown has a team-high 31 goals on the season and is 14th nationally with 3.10 goals score per game. He entered the season with one goal scored in four games played.
  • He is just the fourth player in Head Coach Ryan Moran's tenure (2017) to reach the 30-goal plateau and the other three (Ryan Frawley-46, Trevor Patschorke-33, Brett McIntyre-33) scored 33 goals or more in the championship season of 2019.
  • Brown is the fastest to reach the 29-goal mark since Nate Lewnes scored 31 goals through nine games in 2016.

NOT JUST A ONE-MAN SHOW

  • Junior A Allen Hockenberry had only appeared in two games in his two seasons at UMBC, but leads the team with a dozen assists and is second in scoring (8-12-20). He has four multiple-assist games, including three apiece versus Mercer and Merrimack.
  • Grad student attackman Brett Baucia has 17 goals to date and UMBC's active scoring leader just hit 68 career points (40-28-68).
  • In recent weeks, UMBC has been buoyed by the return of seniors Mike Doughty and Ricky Fedorchak and junior Brian Tregoning. Doughty, who missed six games after starting the opener, contributed two goals and two assists vs. Merrimack. Fedorchak made his season debut at UAlbany and caused a pair of turnovers, while Tregoning debuted in 2023 with a 1-goal, 3-assist effort vs. Mercer.
TEAM DEFENSE

  • Junior goalkeeper Jayson Tingue, who saw limited action until starting both 2022 America East playoff games, stands fourth in the nation with a goals against average of 8.49. He is also ranked 12th in save percentage (53.6). Tingue was one of nine men's players across the country to be added to the Tewaaraton Watch List on March 9.
  • Defensively, UMBC is ranked No. 4, allowing only 8.80 goals per game. UMBC's riding has been excellent, as opponents are only clearing at a 81.5 percent clip, ranked tenth-best in the country. The Retrievers caused a season-high 13 turnovers versus UML and climbed to No. 21 nationally with 8.9 CT's per contest.

 OTHER NOTES
  • The Retrievers received votes in the USILA Coaches' Poll in four consecutive weeks in March.
  • UMBC is 6-0 at home this season and has outscored its foes, 80-35. They are 18-2 in their last 20 contests on campus.
  • UMBC's 5-1 start tied the best six-game mark in the Retrievers' Division I history (1981) with the 1992 squad.
  • The Retrievers' 8-4 victory over Towson on March 5 was the 400th in the 55th season of intercollegiate competition (403-358).
  • The America East Conference named UMBC junior goalkeeper Jayson Tingue the Men's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week on March 6. Tingue allowed only four goals and made eight saves in back-to-back wins over St. Bonaventure (13-4) and Towson (8-4).
  • The America East Conference named UMBC freshman face-off specialist Alex Steers as the Men's Lacrosse Rookie of the Week on April 10, 2023. The first-year Retriever had only attempted one face-off before (vs. Mount St. Mary's on Feb. 24) winning 16-of-24 and garnering a team season-best 11 ground balls in UMBC's 15-8 victory over UMass Lowell on April 8.
  • UMBC scored four extra-man goals – all in the fourth quarter – on March 18 at Bryant. The last time the Retriever program tallied four in a game was April 2, 2014 in a 16-11 win over Hartford. Senior Ryan Johnston had three of the four man-up goals, which is tied for an individual team record. Baucia assisted on three of those four extra-man tallies versus the Bulldogs.
  • Fifth-year midfielder Taylor Bohahan, who served as a co-captain in 2022, will reprise his role in 2023, along with senior defender Ricky Fedorchak and juniors Kyle Hoff (SSDM) and Brian Tregoning (A).
  • After competing on the grass at Retriever Soccer Park in 2022, UMBC returns to the turf at UMBC Stadium this spring. UMBC Stadium now features a new press box, a fan amenities building and new walking bridge to the facility.
THE STAFF
  • Head Coach Ryan Moran enters his seventh season at the helm of the Retrievers. He earned America East Conference Coach of the Year honors in 2021 after leading the squad to a share of the regular season title. He has led the Retrievers to the league playoffs in five of the six full years of competition. As the No. 4 seed, Moran piloted the 2019 team to an America East title and a NCAA Tournament win over Marist.  Moran is 43-39 overall and 21-15 in America East play.
  • Craig Chick and Nick Griffin (volunteer) return for their second years as assistants, while Mikey Herring joined the staff last summer.

A GLANCE AT THE BEARCATS
  • Binghamton (7-3, 3-1 America East) saw its four-game winning streak end in heartbreaking fashion, as the defending league champion Vermont Catamounts edged the Bearcats, 11-9, in Vestal, N.Y. on April 8.
  • BU jumped out to a 4-1 lead, but UVM responded with a 9-3 surge before a pair of late Bearcat goals tightened the margin of victory for the visitors.
  • Sophomore A Matthew Keegan led Binghamton with four goals and sophomore netminder Connor Winters came up with 20 saves in the contest.
  • Binghamton is second in America East in scoring offense at 13.5 goals per game. Keegan has burst on the scene, leading the conference with 37 goals, while junior midfielder Thomas Greenblatt is tops in AE with 27 assists and 45 total points.
  • Binghamton is 5-1 away from home in 2023.

 ALL-TIME SERIES
  • UMBC leads the all-time series, 18-7, and has won 10 of 11 at UMBC Stadium.
  • The two teams have split the last ten meetings, including a pair of decisions in 2022.
  • Last season, Binghamton won, 12-8, during the regular season in Vestal, but UMBC avenged that setback with a 7-6 triumph in the America East semi-final contest in Burlington.
  • In the playoff game, Tregoning and Bohanan scored two goals each for UMBC.
  • In his first collegiate start, Tingue made nine saves to earn the victory.
