Men's Lacrosse Drops 12-6 Decision at UAlbany

Retrievers cut 7-1 halftime deficit in half, but the rally stalls in the fourth quarter.

Box Score Albany, N.Y. –  Host UAlbany raced out to a 7-1 lead and withstood a third quarter UMBC rally to defeat the Retrievers, 12-6, at Casey Stadium.

For the seventh time in nine games, UMBC junior attackman Mateo Brown scored multiple goals, leading the visitors with a pair of scores. Junior goalkeeper Jayson Tingue saw 41 Great Dane shots and made 13 saves. Junior face-off specialist Zach Dudley won 11-of-19 draws and collected six ground balls.

UMBC fell to 6-3 overall and 1-2 in America East play, while UAlbany improved to 3-5, 1-1.

UMBC struggled in the clearing game and the Danes got on the board first, scoring at the 7:17 mark of the period. The Retrievers failed on four of eight clearing attempts and were outshot, 17-4, in the first 15 minutes. Tingue made four saves, but the Danes scored another man-up goal and tallied with two seconds left on the clock to lead, 3-0 at the period's conclusion.

UAlbany built the lead to 5-0 before UMBC sophomore midfielder Josh Tang broke the seal, firing in a shot in from the left alley at the 6:29 mark of the second quarter. The Great Danes would score twice in a span of 2:23 and took a 7-1 halftime advantage.

The Retrievers outscored the Danes, 4-1, in the third quarter to come within 8-5 after 45 minutes. Brown scored just 31 seconds into the period, but UAlbany equalized at the 6:43 mark. Then, Brown, Dane Hall and Brett Baucia strung together three straight to bring the visitors to within 8-5 with a minute remaining on the third quarter clock.

But UAlbany countered with a 4-0 run before a Jordan Galloway goal with 3:20 remaining finalized the scoring. Galloway was the only other multiple-point scorer for UMBC with a goal and an assist.

Senior defender Ricky Fedorchak made his season debut and caused a pair of turnovers.

UMBC returns home to face UMass Lowell on Saturday, April 8. The opening face-off is scheduled for noon.
