RETRIEVER NOTES
- Host Bryant took a 9-4 halftime lead and held off hard-charging UMBC, 17-13, at Beirne Stadium in the America East opener for both squads on March 18. Â
- Junior attackman Mateo Brown posted his second five-goal game of the season and added two assists to pace the Retrievers. Graduate student linemate Brett Baucia contributed a pair of goals and three assists.
- UMBC scored four extra-man goals – all in the fourth quarter – on Saturday at Bryant. The last time the Retriever program tallied four in a game was April 2, 2014 in a 16-11 win over Hartford. Senior Ryan Johnston had three of the four man-up goals, which is tied for an individual team record. Baucia assisted on three of those four extra-man tallies versus the Bulldogs. Â
- UMBC's 5-1 start tied the best six-game mark in the Retrievers' Division I history (1981) with the 1992 squad.
- The Retrievers' 8-4 victory over Towson on March 5 was the 400th in the 55th season of intercollegiate competition (401-357).
- For the third consecutive week, the Retrievers received votes in the USILA Coaches' Poll.
- The Retrievers' scoring defense remains a top-ten ranked unit in NCAA Division I lacrosse. Through seven games, UMBC has allowed 9.0 goals per game, which is the sixth-best figure in the country.
- UMBC is fifth nationally in opponent clearing percentage. Retriever foes have only cleared successfully in 77.9 percent of their attempts.Â
- The America East Conference named UMBC junior goalkeeper Jayson Tingue the Men's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week on March 6. Tingue allowed only four goals and made eight saves in back-to-back wins over St. Bonaventure (13-4) and Towson (8-4).
- Tingue is ranked in the top 20 in the nation in goals against average (8.80, 5th) and save percentage (53.9, 18th). Tingue was one of nine men's players across the country to be added to the Tewaaraton Watch List on March 9.
- Brown has a team-high 22 goals on the season and is 15th nationally with 3.14 goals score per game. He entered the season with one goal scored in four games played.
- Baucia has 12 goals to date and is approaching 60 career points (35-24-59). His 16-game scoring streak came to an end in the win over Towson.
- Fifth-year midfielder Taylor Bohahan, who served as a co-captain in 2022, will reprise his role in 2023, along with senior defender Ricky Fedorchak and juniors Kyle Hoff (SSDM) and Brian Tregoning (A).
- After competing on the grass at Retriever Soccer Park in 2022, UMBC returns to the turf at UMBC Stadium this spring. UMBC Stadium now features a new press box, a fan amenities building and new walking bridge to the facility.
A GLANCE AT THE WARRIORSÂ Â Â Â
- Merrimack is an associate member of the America East Conference in men's lacrosse. They are not eligible for the league tournament in 2023, but will be in 2024.
- The Warriors got off a great start, upsetting Hofstra, 10-7, to open the season en route to a 3-0 start.
- Merrimack debuted in America East last week, falling at home to Binghamton, 14-7.
- The Warriors average 11.6 goals per game and allow 10.1. The team's face-off winning percentage is 39.7 and they have taken 38 penalties in seven contests.
- Sophomore A/M Brian Russell leads the squad with 19 goals. He has been a model of consistency, tallying multiple goals in all seven games. Junior goalkeeper Henry Vogt has been outstanding. His save percentage of 58.8 would ranked No. 4 nationally (programs reclassifying are not included in national rankings).
