Men's Lacrosse Opens America East Play at Bryant on Saturday

The Bulldogs make their America East debut against the 5-1 Retrievers.

BALTIMORE - The UMBC men's lacrosse (5-1) opens its 19th season of America East Conference competition on Saturday, March 18 when they face new league member Bryant (4-2). The game will be played at Beirne Stadium with the opening face-off set for noon. The broadcast is available via AmericaEast.tv.

RETRIEVER NOTES
  • UMBC outscored pesky Mercer, 8-2, in the second half and defeated the Bears, 13-8, in cold, blustery conditions at UMBC Stadium on Saturday, March 11. Graduate student attackman Brett Baucia scored four of his career high five goals in the final 26 minutes.
  • Playing for the fourth time in 11 days, UMBC improved to 5-1 on the campaign. The 5-1 start ties the best six-game mark in the Retrievers' Division I history (1981) with the 1992 squad.
  • UMBC's 8-4 victory over Towson on March 5 was the 400th in the 55th season of intercollegiate competition (400-356).
  • The Retrievers received votes in the USILA Coaches' Poll (17 votes, 256h overall) as of March 6.
  • The Retrievers' scoring defense remains the top-ranked unit in NCAA Division I lacrosse. Through six games, UMBC has allowed 7.67 goals per game, tied with North Carolina for the top spot in the country.
  • The America East Conference named UMBC junior goalkeeper Jayson Tingue the Men's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week on March 6. Tingue allowed only four goals and made eight saves in back-to-back wins over St. Bonaventure (13-4) and Towson (8-4).  He leads the nation with a GAA of 7.12 and his save percentage of 58.0 is ranked ninth in the country. Tingue was one of nine men's players across the country to be added to the Tewaaraton Watch List on March 9.
  • Junior attackman Mateo Brown has a team-high 17 goals on the season and is tied for 29th nationally with 2.83 goals score per game. He entered the season with one goal scored in four games played.
  • Junior attackman Allen Hockenberry added his name to the list of first-time three-goal scorers. He tallied three goals and two assists versus St. Bonaventure. He has seven goals and a team-best nine assists through six games after seeing action in two career contests prior to 2023.
  • In addition to Brown notching his first career multiple-goal game, sophomore midfielder Josh Tang also posted his first career three-goal effort in the 16-6 win over Mount St. Mary's.
  • Grad student Brett Baucia, has ten goals to date and just passed the 50-point plateau (33-21-54). His 16-game scoring streak came to an end in the win over Towson.
  • Fifth-year midfielder Taylor Bohahan, who served as a co-captain in 2022, will reprise his role in 2023, along with senior defender Ricky Fedorchak and juniors Kyle Hoff (SSDM) and Brian Tregoning (A).
  • After competing on the grass at Retriever Soccer Park in 2022, UMBC returns to the turf at UMBC Stadium this spring. UMBC Stadium now features a new press box, a fan amenities building and new walking bridge to the facility.
A GLANCE AT THE BULLDOGS
  • Under first-year Head Coach Brad Ross, Bryant opened with four wins in five outings, prior to the 11-6 loss at Air Force on March 11.
  • Four of Bryant's first five games were decided by three goals or less.
  • The Bulldogs are eighth in the nation in shooting percentage (34.1 percent) and 16th in scoring offense (14.0 goals per game).
