Elkhart, Ind.- The UMBC men's swimming team finished the 2022-23 campaign in outstanding fashion, placing 22nd of the 41 teams competing in the CSCAA National Invitational Meet held at Beacon Health Aquatic Center.
The men amassed 137 points and were paced by junior Daniel Nicusan, who accounted for 34 points, tied for 51st of 194 scoring swimmers.
"It was another great meet to cap off another championship season," said Head Coach
Matt Donovan. "It is exciting to know that we can race with the best in the land. We came to race and showed everyone what we are all about."
Nicusan earned bronze in the 100 individual medley, posting a mark of 48.72, the 15th fastest time in the nation this season and a school record. He also finished ninth in the 100 backstroke with a personal best time and 17th in the 200 individual medley. Â
Sophomore
Oliver Gassmann produced a pair of top-20 finishes, placing 16th in the 100 butterfly and 19 the 50 fly. Junior
Ryan Harding also placed in the top 20, touching in at 20th in the 50 backstroke.
The Retrievers produced three finishes amongst the top 23 quartets in relay competition. The 200 medley relay group of Harding, Nicusan, Gassmann and
Christian Coleman posted a mark of 1:29.09, good for 15th place.
Grad student
Jimmy Dwyer and juniors
Max Casey-Bolanos and
Bode Neale also were key contributors to UMBC's efforts.
