Worcester, Mass. – The UMBC men's swimming and diving squads turned in another outstanding performance on the second day of competition at the 2023 America East Championships.
UMBC took a pair of individual golds and capped the night by setting a new UMBC, America East and meet record in the 200 freestyle relay. The quartet of
Oliver Gassmann,
Christian Coleman,
Niklas Weigelt and
Bode Neale edged Binghamton by .06 seconds with a mark of 1:20.11.
Junior
Dani Nicusan defended his title in the 200 IM, cruising past the field in a personal best and NCAA "B" cut time of 1:46.60. Sophomore JJ Chapman also earned a medal, taking third place, while seniors
Jimmy Dwyer (4th) and
Michael Dressler (7th) also competed in the finals.
Gassmann, a sophomore, added to his impressive resumé, taking the 50 yard freestyle. He won both butterfly events at the 2022 Championships, but nearly broke the 20-second plateau in the all-out sprint, touching the wall in 20.03. Classmate
Christian Coleman (20.24) took home bronze, while juniors
Bode Neale and
Ryan Harding finished fourth and fifth.
Senior
Will Henrickson capped his career with a third-place finish on the 3-meter board. He recorded a mark of 267.45, just ahead of fourth place finsher, Retriever freshman and 1-meter champion
Anders Logas (263.25).
Logas peformed brilliantly in the prelims, recording a score of 323.80, which qualified him for the NCAA Zone Championships at West Virginia University from March 6-8.
The Retrievers have surged to the lead, with 359 points, passing Bryant (292), and pulling further ahead of Binghamton (188).
