BOSTON, Mass. – The UMBC men's track and field program jumped up three spots in the standings on Sunday, taking fifth place overall (69) ahead of Bryant (68), NJIT (51), New Hampshire (49), and Vermont (35.5) in the 2023 America East Indoor Championships.
UMass Lowell captured the title and UAlbany placed second.
UMBC Overview:
- Both relay teams got a chance to shine on the podium as the 4x800 squad of Tyler Dregely, Lamine Fofana, Zachary Taylor, and Daron Taylor earned second with a time of 7:43.20, while the 4x400 quartet of Jaeden Burke, Michael Arnold, Marquis Miller, and Jayo Adegboyo ran a 3:15.67 en route to third place.
- Of the eight student-athletes among the relays, Burke (21.92 in 200m), Zach Taylor (2:30.33 in 1,000m), and Miller (49.05 in 400m) all posted top-five placements, whereas Dregely set a personal-record in the 800m (1:56.76).
- Sophomores Ibrahim Khairat and Shavar Staats were the two male medalists for the Dawgs, with Khairat donning silver in the high jump at 14.61m and Staats claiming second as well for his 6.83 time in the 60m dash.
- Grad student Nicolas Alphonse put up a nine-spot for UMBC with a pair of top-five placements in the 60m hurdles (8.62) and 500m (1:05.33).
- Rounding out the scoring for the Black and Gold were freshman Donovan Young's PR in the triple jump (4th at 14.23m), in addition to freshman Seun Olajide's (5th at 22.00) and senior Shamar Barnes' (6th at 22.09) 200m times.
- The 3,000m saw a pair of student-athletes come away with personal-records as junior Jafar Hussen ran a 8:36.84 while classmate Brendan Cave logged a 8:54.06.
