Men's Indoor Track and Field Returns to Boston for America East Championships

The Retrievers hope to cap a strong campaign against the conference's elite.

BOSTON, Mass. – The UMBC men's track and field program will be returning to Boston for the fifth straight season (2021 canceled) as they attempt to capture their first conference title at the 33rd annual America East Indoor Championships.

Last Meet Recap (Liberty Open):
 
  • Three separate UMBC runners were the fastest in their events at the Liberty Open as Shavar Staats won the 60m (6.84), Jaeden Burke claimed first in the 200m (21.86), and Michael Arnold was number one in the 500m (1:05.09). Burke's mark was the third-fastest in the America East's indoor campaign and Arnold's was the ninth-best mark.
  • The 200m saw both Marquis Miller and Shamar Barnes shine as well, ranking second and third respectively with times of 22.06 and 22.23.
  • Nicolas Alphonse also placed as the runner-up to one of his teammates, doing so in the 500m with a mark of 1:06.38 and he also recorded a fourth-place finish in the 60m Hurdles at 8.43. Tyler Dregely (1:06.68) and Pelumi Olujamu (1:07.83) slotted behind him at fourth and fifth in the 500M.
  • Seun Olajide, Zachary Taylor, and Toren Burr all came in fourth place, for the 60m (7.03), mile (4:17.43), and weight throw (16.56m) respectively, while the 4x400m Relay quartet (3:28.129), Ibrahim Khairat (14.35m in Triple Jump), and Will Sakowicz (15:30.08 in 5,000m) all took home the bronze medals. Khairat added a fifth place showing in the long jump (6.68m) to his resume.
Last Time At The America East Indoor Championships (2022):
 
Day 1:
 
  • Ian Hoffman was the top performer for the Dawgs on the opening day, being named to the All-America East Team after he secured the silver for his 4.65m pole vault.
  • Staats punched his ticket to the finals in the 60m dash where he would place third with a 6.91.
  • Both Shamar Barnes and Taheer Pierce made it past the preliminaries as well, as Barnes took fifth in the 200M (21.74) while Pierce logged eighth for the 400m (50.21).
  • The distance medley relay group was able to snag the bronze in their event, racing around the track in a time of 9:58.95.
  • Arnold went from sixth in the 500m prelims (1:05.79) and shot all the way up to the gold standard in the finals, taking home the top prize with a 1:04.66 mark, joining Hoffman among the All-Conference selections. Alphonse also qualified for the 500m finals, scoring a point with an eighth-place allotment (1:07.47).
 
Day 2:
 
  • The only scoring for the Retrievers that started and finished on day two came in the form of the 4x800m Relay Team, snatching the bronze medal with a speed of 7:46.10.
