ANNAPOLIS – The UMBC women's indoor track and field squad struck gold twice as they got the 2023-24 campaign off in fine fashion at the Navy Invitational at Wesley A. Brown Fieldhouse.
Junior
Caitlyn Bobb won the 500 meters and posted the second-fastest time in Retriever history with a mark of 1:12.93. She won the event by over three seconds. Her time mark lowered the Bermudian national record which she already held.
Classmate
Ava Roberts earned gold in the shot put, recording a personal record and the fourth-best mark in Retriever history at 14.50m.
NOTES
- Junior Za'Kayza Parsons placed fifth in the long jump with a personal best leap of 5.63m. The mark is the fifth-best in school history.
- Sophomore Leanne McDonald posted the second-fastest time in the 400 meters with a mark of 57.34. Freshmen Genelle Stephens (6th, 58.85) and Dalyce Schmidt (8th, 59.85) also placed in the top eight.
- Sophomore Marie Abongwa finished seventh in the weight throw, with a mark of a personal best 15.58m effort.
- In her debut, freshman Charliana DaCosta finished in a tie for fifth place in the 60 meter dash, clocking in at 7.69.
- The 4 x 400 relay quartet rallied on the final two legs to defeat Towson and finish third to wrap up the meet. McDonald, Stephens, Shannel Sibblies and Bobb posted a mark of 3:50.55.
The team returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 13 when they compete in the Nittany Lion Challenge at Penn State University.
