BALTIMORE– UMBC women's soccer, winners of their last three matches, welcomes LIU to Retriever Soccer Park on Sunday afternoon. The Retrievers are coming off a 1-0 win against Delaware State on Thursday night and are riding a three-game win streak, including a perfect 2-0 at home.
NOTABLE:
- The Retrievers got a first half goal from Meghan McKye (Toronto, Ontario), and used a strong defensive effort for a 1-0 win against the Hornets on Thursday night. McKye netted her team-leading third goal of the year in the 28th minute off a feed from Caroline Koutsos (Boyds, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel).
- Senior goalkeeper Morgan McGruder (Overland Park, Kan.) needed to make just one save in the contest as the Retrievers outshot the Hornets 11-5.
- The Retrievers are off to their best start to a season through five games since 2014 when they started 4-1-0.
- McKye leads the team with three goals and one assist for seven points. Lola Negrete (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) is just behind her at four points (1g, 2a).
- Koutsos, Natasha Munro (Burlington, Ontario), and Delainey Varela-Keen (Lancaster, Pa.) also have a goal this season.
- McGruder has played every minute in goal for the Retrievers, allowing just six goals (1.20 GAA) while making 18 saves (.750 save percentage) with two shutouts.
A GLANCE AT THE SHARKS:
- LIU comes to Baltimore at 2-3-0 on the year, having dropped their last two contests. Most recently, the Sharks fell 1-0 at home against Vermont.
- UMBC will be the third straight America East opponent for the Sharks, and the fourth through the first six games. LIU is 0-3 against America East opponents with losses to NJIT (4-0) and Vermont (1-0).
- Jaylin Counts leads the Sharks with a goal and two assists for four points. Taylor Curcio, Maria Camila Orozco, and Gina Proviano have also scored for LIU.
- Eva Katsaitis has seen the majority of time in net making four starts and allowing seven goals with nine saves. Kayla DeTreux has also seen time in net, giving up three goals with 11 saves.
ALL-TIME SERIES:
- UMBC and LIU, formerly LIU Brooklyn, have met seven times prior as former conference foes with UMBC leading the series 4-2-1. The two will be meeting for the first time since 2012 where LIU won 1-0 in New York.
- The Retrievers are 2-1 all-time at home, and have won two of the last three meetings all-time.
