Women's Cross Country Opens '22 Campaign With Solid Effort in Emmitsburg

Beyer places fifth; three freshmen finish in top 16 overall

EMMITBURG – The UMBC women's cross country squad debuted under new Head Coach Mike DuPaul and bested two of three foes at the Mount St. Mary's 5k Duals.

UMBC defeated the host Mountaineers, 25-30, and Catholic, 23-33, and narrowly fell to Howard, 29-26.

Senior Emmy Beyer (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron) led the way for the Retrievers, finishing fifth overall. Three UMBC freshman placed in the top 16, including Lily Strelecki (Grand Rapids, Mich.), who crossed the tape just behind Beyer in sixth position.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Strelecki made an impressive debut, nearly breaking the 20-minute mark (20:03.2).
  • Freshman Lyna Beirach and senior Margo Henley placed in 11th and 12th respectively, with Henley knocking 17 seconds off of her 24th place effort in 2021.
  • Freshman Diana Pukys came in as UMBC's fifth finisher in 16th position

The team competes at the Navy XC Twilight Event on Friday, Sept. 16.
