Men's Soccer Heads to Philadelphia for Tuesday Contest at St. Joseph's

UMBC will play three straight America East games following the game versus the Hawks.

The Retriever men's soccer team (5-1-1) tries to earn their first road victory of the season when UMBC travels to Philadelphia to take on a stingy St. Joseph's squad on Tuesday, Sept. 20. The game gets underway at 7:00 p.m. at Sweeney Field and will be broadcast by ESPN+.

RETRIEVER NOTES

  • UMBC men's soccer got the job done on both ends of the field and blanked St. Peter's, 3-0, before 1,064 fans at Retriever Soccer Park on Saturday evening. Juniors Alek Wroblewski and Hans Nesheim and senior Ryan Becher were the goal-scorers, while senior goalkeeper Quantrell Jones earned his 13th career shutout.
  • Jones is now tied for sixth place on UMBC's all-time shutouts list with Robbie Mamula ('93) and Andy Marchica ('06). He earned his 24th career victory, tying him with Steve King ('09) for fifth place on the all-time wins' list.
  • UMBC received 9 votes (T-27th overall) in the Sept. 13 United Soccer Coaches poll. The Retrievers were No. 2 team in the Northeast Region poll, one place behind America East rival Vermont.
  • Nationally, UMBC is fourth in goals scored (21), tied for sixth in goal differential (+14), tied for fourth in goals per game (3.0) and tenth in points per game (8.57),
  • Sophomore forward Spencer Hanks is tied for 11th place in the nation with five goals scored, tied for 19th with 0.71 goals per game and tied for 18th with 1.71 points per contest. Hanks earned a spot on College Soccer News' Team of the Week for games ending Sept. 4.
  • Senior goalkeeper Quantrell Jones moved into a tie for fifth place on UMBC's all-time victories list with his 24th career win versus St. Peter's.
  • Calheira set a school record by scoring 10 seconds into the contest vs. St. Francis Brooklyn on Sept. 2.
  • The America East Conference tabbed UMBC sophomore forward Spencer Hanks as its Offensive Player of the Week on August 29. Hanks, who missed the entire 2021 season, rehabilitating from ACL surgery, returned to the field and scored three goals and added one assist in the Retrievers' 8-2 win over Fairfield on August 26.
  • Senior midfielder Ryan Becher has hit the 15-goal and 40-point plateaus (16g, 13a, 45 pts.).
  • Head Coach Pete Caringi, Jr. enters his 32nd season at the helm of the Retrievers. The 2014 NSCAA National Coach of the Year now has posted a record of 315-199-80 in his tenure on Hilltop Circle. He is assisted by Associate Head Coach Anthony Adams, UMBC, '97, who has spent 25 previous years on the sidelines with Coach Caringi, after four years (1992-95) competing under the Retriever mentors. Pete Caringi III enters year No. 9 on the staff and volunteer assistant coach Sam DeBone is beginning his 24th year in his role.
A GLANCE AT THE HAWKS
  • The Saint Joseph's Hawks are 0-2-4 so far on the season, but recently drew at 1-1 tie at 17-th ranked Dayton. Graduate student Garrett Lyons tied the match in the 54' with an assist from junior midfielder Ariel Hadar.
  • Lyons leads the team with points with three on the season including one goal and one assist.
  • The Hawks only have three goals this season, but have only allowed six.

THE ALL-TIME SERIES
  • UMBC holds a 7-5-0 series advantage, but the Hawks won the last meeting, 2-1, at Retriever Soccer Park in the spring of 2020. Taylor Calheira scored in the 81' to slice the Hawks' lead in half, but the hosts could not earn a result.
  • UMBC's last contest at St. Joseph's occurred in 1991. UMBC won that match, 2-1, and has won two of three all-time meetings in Philadelphia.
