Stony Brook, N.Y. – UMBC got a pair of solid starting pitching efforts, but the bats were quiet in a doubleheader setback to host Stony Brook. The Seawolves won their fourth consecutive one-run decision over UMBC in the opener with an extra-inning 3-2 decision (8 innings) and also capture the nightcap, 6-3.
In the opener, sophomore hurler
Luke Johnson (Lewes, Del.) struck out a career high nine batters and allowed just one earned run over six innings. In the nightcap, freshman
Nick Remy (Atkinson, N.H.) allowed three earned runs in 5.2, keeping UMBC in the game until the late innings.
The Retrievers (18-27, 8-16) only produced one extra-base and eight singles in the two contests. Junior catcher
Connor Kelly (Cumberland, Md.) drove in a pair of runs in the nightcap and sophomore shortstop
Drew Roberts (Matthews, N.C.) produced a pair of hits in six plate appearances.
HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME 1
- The opener was a pitcher's duel, as Johnson allowed single runs in the first and second, but shut down the Seawolves on no hits over the next four innings.
- With two outs in the UMBC fourth, Kelly drew a walk and Roberts hit a sinking line drive to right field, which got down in front of the SBU outfielder and rolled to deep right. Kelly scored and Roberts would eventually follow him, taking advantage of some Seawolf indecision on the relay to slide home and tie the score at 2-2. Roberts was credited with a triple.
- But only one Retriever reached base over the final four innings and, in the second extra inning, SBU loaded the bases with one out and score the game-winner on a single to third base.
HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME 2
- Stony Brook jumped on top again, taking advantage of a pair of UMBC errors to plate three runs.
- UMBC turned the tables in the fourth, scoring once on a Seawolf error and getting a clutch two-out single by Kelly up the middle to send Roberts and Johnson racing home to tie the score at 3-all.
- The Seawolves took the lead with a run in the bottom of the sixth and added two more in the seventh.
