Men's Lacrosse To Face Off for America East Title on Saturday

The Retrievers face top-seeded and host Vermont in a nationally-televised contest

The third-seeded UMBC men's lacrosse team (6-6) earned the opportunity to compete for the program's fifth America East Tournament title by virtue of a 7-6 semifinal win over No. 2 Binghamton on Thursday.

To earn the crown and automatic NCAA Tournament berth, the Retrievers will have to get past top-seeded Vermont (10-6) on the Catamounts' home turf of Virtue Field at noon on Saturday, May 7.
ESPNU will broadcast the contest with Drew Carter and Don Zimmerman on the call.

UMBC 7, BINGHAMTON 6
·       UMBC allowed a season-low six goals and defeated No. 2 Binghamton, 7-6, to advance to the America East Men's Lacrosse Championship game.

·       Sophomore attackman Brian Tregoning (Silver Spring, Md.) and senior midfielder Taylor Bohanan (Arnold, Md./St. Mary's) scored two goals each for UMBC.

·       In his first collegiate start, sophomore goalkeeper Jayson Tingue (Bay Shore, N.Y.) made nine saves to earn the victory.

·       The win was UMBC's first in a one-goal decision this season. They were previously 0-2.

TODAY'S STORYLINES
·       Today's match-up is a repeat of the title game in 2019, where No. 4 UMBC rallied to defeat No. 3 Vermont, 14-13 at LaValle Stadium. That game marked the first-ever meeting between UMBC and Vermont in the America East Tournament in the Retrievers' 20th tournament game.

·       This is UMBC's 23rd America East Tournament game, yet just the fourth where they have been a true road team. The last time the Retrievers played for a tournament title as the road team was 2007, when they lost a 15-14 decision at UAlbany.

·       The game is a match-up of the league's most experience team versus its second-youngest team. The Catamounts had 96 seasons of intercollegiate playing experience entering the 2022 season, while the Retrievers entered with only 60 seasons. Three of the Retrievers' top six offensive midfielders are freshmen.

·       Junior Mike Doughty (Glenelg, Md./Glenelg) leads a balanced offense with 19 goals and 18 assists. He would need to score a goal and add two assists to become UMBC's first "20/20" player since All-American Drew Westervelt scored 35 goals and added 36 assists in 2007.

·       Sophomore face-off specialist Zach Dudley (Annapolis, Md./St. Mary's) just became the 26th player in school history to win 100 face-offs in a single season. His 137 face-offs won is 14th-best mark in a UMBC history. Dudley won 9-of-17 draws versus Vermont on April 2.

·       Sophomore goalkeeper Jayson Tingue made his collegiate starting debut on Thursday. He had played only 7:51 prior to going the distance versus Binghamton in the semifinals.

EARLIER MATCH-UP: VERMONT 12, UMBC 3

·       UMBC ran into some hot goalkeeping early and defending America East champion Vermont went on to defeat the Retrievers, 12-3, at Virtue Field. The setback was UMBC's third in a row, but
they have gone on to win four of their last five contests.

·       The Retrievers outshot Vermont, 15-7, in the first 15 minutes, but UVM goalkeeper Ryan Cornell made seven saves without allowing a score. UMBC ended up outshooting the hosts, 34-29, but did get on the board until the middle of the fourth quarter. Vermont had built a 10-0 lead at the point when graduate student Brett Baucia scored with 8:23 remaining

THE SERIES
  • UMBC leads the all-time series with Vermont, 14-5, but had their brief two-game winning streak halted early last month.
·       UVM has prevailed the last three times in Burlington and the Retrievers' last victory in Vermont occurred in 2014.
