Baseball Falls to UMass Lowell In Series Opener

LOWELL, MA - After both teams remained scoreless over the first seven innings, the UMass Lowell (10-16, 4-6 AE) offense eeked out a 2-1 victory over the Retrievers (12-16, 4-6 AE) at Lalacheur Field.

UMBC sophomore Luke Johnson (Bethesda, MD.) pitched seven shutout innings and recorded six strikeouts, but took the tough luck loss.

In the top of the eighth, the Retrievers got on the board when Ian Diaz (Philadelphia, PA.)  walked with bases loaded to score Michael Cilio (Chester, N.J.). The River Hawks responded with an RBI single and a well-hit ground ball forcing the UMBC defense to settle for a play at first base while the runner scored from third.

How It Happened
  • After allowing a single in the first inning, Johnson picked off that runner during the next at bat. Drew Roberts (Matthews, N.C.) also had a marvelous put out to end the inning.
  • Zach Dzarnowski (Chesapeake, VA.) earned his first hit of the season in the top of the 7th but was stranded on base.
  • In the eighth inning, Logan Doran (Greenville, S.C.) hit a huge lead off double to left center. The Retrievers would load the bases with no outs, but could only push across one run.
  • The River Hawks respond with two runs of their own in the bottom of the eighth.
The two teams will continue their series tomorrow in Lowell at 1:00 p.m.
