Baseball's Ninth Inning Rally Falls Just Short

Logan Doran's blasts 3-run home in 7-6 loss at UML

Lowell, Mass. – A UMBC ninth inning rally came up one run short as  host UMass Lowell took the second game of the three game series, defeating UMBC, 7-6, at LaLacheur Park on Saturday evening.

UMBC designated hitter Logan Doran hit a towering three-run home run to straight-away left field with no outs in the top of the ninth to slice UML's 7-3 lead to 7-6.

Matt Ryan (walk) and Myles Nicholson (single) would reach base to put the tying run in scoring position with two outs, but Drew Roberts struck out to end the game.

Doran's home run was his second of the season. Ryan reached base in all four plate appearances with an RBI triple and three walks.

UMBC freshman pitcher Jayden Shertel allowed five runs on seven hits in five innings of work.

After UML took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first, the Retrievers scored three times in the top of the third inning to take a 3-1 lead. After catcher Tony Krueger singled to center to lead off the inning, third baseman Matt Ryan followed by slugging a triple to the gap in right-center field to plate Krueger. Left fielder Christian Easley reached on an error, scoring Ryan, and advanced to third base on a wild pitch. Drew Roberts brought Easley to the plate with an RBI groundout to second base.

But the lead was short-lived, as the first four UML batters reached in the bottom of the inning and the hosts retook the lead at 4-3.

The River Hawks added single runs in the fourth, sixth and eighth innings to extend the lead to 7-3.

UMBC (12-17, 4-7 America East) is now 2-6 in games decided by a single run.

The series finale is set for Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
