Baseball Loses Narrow 6-4 Decision to Binghamton

Justin Taylor recorded his fourth homer of the season

Vestal, N.Y. – UMBC baseball dropped a narrow 6-4 decision to host Binghamton in the middle game of a three-game set.

The Bearcats scored twice in the first inning and added a run in the third to lead, 3-0. But the Retrievers bounced back with a pair of two-out runs in the fourth inning to trim the deficit to a 3-2. Drew Roberts singled to right field to bring home Logan Doran and move Matt Ryan to third base. Then, the two UMBC infielders executed a double steal as Ryan scored and Roberts went to third base on a throwing error by the second baseman. But Myles Nicholson flew out to center field to end the threat.

But Binghamton answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning and added another in the sixth to stretch their lead to 6-2.

Ryan would score his second run of the day, coming around on an RBI groundout by Jayden Shertel in the seventh.

The Retrievers got to within 6-4 as Justin Taylor led off the eighth inning by lining his fourth home run of the season into the UMBC bullpen in left field. Luke Trythall singled with two outs to bring the tying run to the plate, but after pinch runner Christian Easley stole both second and third, Ryan fanned to end the threat.

Doran was the lone Retriever to pick up multiple hits as he went 2-for-4 at the plate.

Relievers Shane Gorman, Owen Hamilton and Keegan Leffler covered the final 4.1 innings for UMBC and combined to allow only one run.

The two squads complete the series on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
