Lowell, Mass.-- UMBC women's lacrosse needed a late goal to defeat the River Hawks, 12-11 in a tightly contested game on Saturday. Neither side led by more than two goals at any point in the contest.

The Retrievers improve to 7-4, 1-0 AE while the River Hawks fall to 2-9, 0-3 AE on the year.

Claire Bockstie (Forest Hill, Md./Maryvale Prep) got the go-ahead goal with 15 seconds left on the clock to push UMBC in front for good. The Retrievers battled all fourth quarter, needing to come from behind most of the quarter.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Claire Bockstie got the scoring started on the first possession of the game, taking the Megan Cleverly (Middletown, Md./Middletown) feed to give UMBC a 1-0 lead.
  • The River Hawks would battle back with a pair of goals to take  2-1 lead before Dymin Gerow (Baltimore, Md./Episcopal) found the net to tie it up. Cleverly would get a goal of her own on the next possession to retake the lead.
  • Both defenses stepped up in the second quarter, but it was the River Hawks who took a 7-6 lead into the break.
  • UMass Lowell would take their largest lead of the day at 8-6 after a goal early on in the third.
  • However the Retrievers battled back to take the lead after three straight goals from Megan Halczuk (Fawn Grove, Pa.), Bockstie and Kolby Weedon (Catonsville, Md./Catonsville).
  • As was the case for most of the game, the fourth quarter went back and forth. Everytime the River Hawks would take the lead, UMBC would immediately have the answer.
  • Bockstie would provide the game winner with 15 seconds left after a UML turnover gave UMBC possession with her 44th goal of the year and third of the game.

NOTABLE:
  • Bockstie, Gerow, and Weedon each had three goals to lead the Retrievers. Halczuk added a pair and Cleverly scored once for the Retrievers.
  • Lexi Roberts (Baldwin, Md./Fallston) and Isabella Fontana (Chevy Chase, Md./Academy of the Holy Cross) each saw time in net. Roberts recorded four saves with Fontana stopping three.
  • The Retrievers were a perfect 12-12 on clear attempts and collected 16 draws.

UMBC will return home to take on Binghamton on Wednesday, April 6. Opening draw is set for 3 p.m. on America East TV.
