Men’s Lacrosse Heads to UMass Lowell for Saturday Clash

The game versus the River Hawks is the final road regular season game of 2022

The UMBC men's lacrosse team (3-5, 1-2 America East) plays its final regular season road contest on Saturday, April 16 when they face UMass Lowell (1-9, 1-x AE) on the River Hawks' Senior Day. The opening face-off is set for noon at Cushing Field.

The Retrievers complete the regular season with home games versus Stony Brook and NJIT. After Saturday's impressive 16-7 victory over UAlbany, UMBC is now 3-0 at Retriever Soccer Park, but 0-5 away from their temporary home field in 2022.

Sophomore attackman Mike Doughty (Glenelg, Md./Glenelg) leads the offense with 10 goals and 13 assists, while graduate student linemate Brett Baucia (Crofton, Md./Archbishop Spalding) is the team leader with 14 goals. Doughty is ranked second in America East with 1.63 assists per game.  Baucia is the lone Retriever with points in all eight games to date.

Fifth-year goalkeeper Tommy Lingner's (Fort Salonga, N.Y.) 10.26 goals against average is ranked 13th in the nation.
Sophomore face-off specialist Zach Dudley (Annapolis, Md./St. Mary's) continues to excel as he won 14 of 22 draws against UAlbany and has taken 65.1 percent of his face-offs attempted in three league games. Dudley is 25th in the nation at 55.2 percent and just became the 26th player in school history to win 100 face-offs in a single season.

NOTES FROM UMBC 16, UALBANY 7
  • UMBC men's lacrosse set season bests for goals scored and allowed as the Retrievers handily defeated UAlbany, 16-7, on April 9. It was the most goals scored by the Retrievers since a 19-13 win over High Point on March 7, 2020, the final game of that truncated season.

  • Attackmen Brian Tregoning (Silver Spring, Md.) (3g, 3a) and Mike Doughty (2g, 4a) each recorded team season highs with six points apiece.

  • Short-stick defensive middies Kyle Hoff (Center Valley, Pa.) and Talon Campbell (Highland, Md./Reservoir) each scored their first career goals over a 39-second span during UMBC's 9-2 second half surge.
RETRIEVER NOTEBOOK
  • UMBC leads the nation in man-down defense, killing off 19 of 23 penalties through eight games.  After allowing four XMG in the first three games of the season, the Retrievers have not allowed a man-up goal in the last five games and last 13 opponent opportunities. UMBC's 23 penalties committed is tied with Hopkins and Georgetown for the third-fewest in the country.

  • The Retrievers are also ranked 17th in face off winning percentage (54.7)

  • A season ago, UMBC won four of five one-goal decisions, but are 0-2 in those ultra-thin margins in 2022.

  • UMBC has captured three America East awards to date. The league tabbed freshman Kevin Doughty  (Glenelg, Md./Glenelg) as its Rookie of the Week for his two-goal effort in the 13-10 win over Utah. Graduate student attackman Brett Baucia earned Offensive Player of the Week on Feb. 21, 2022. He scored a career-high four goals in UMBC's opening 12-8 win over preseason No. 17 Drexel on Feb. 19. Sophomore SSDM Kyle Hoff earned the league's Defensive Player of the Week honor on April 11. He picked up four ground balls, caused a turnover and scored his first collegiate goal in the 16-7 win over UAlbany.

  • The UMBC men's lacrosse team has selected fifth-year senior goalkeeper Tommy Lingner (Fort Salonga, N.Y.) and senior midfielder Taylor Bohanan (Arnold, Md./St. Mary's) as its captains for the 2022 spring campaign. Both players are first-year captains.

  • Lingner allowed only 9.18 goals per game in 2021, leading America East and finishing sixth in the nation. As a freshman, the Retriever netminder led the country with a 7.33 GAA. Lingner just became the seventh goalkeeper in school history to record 400 saves. His 448 stops is now sixth on UMBC's all-time list.

  • Graduate student Colin Kasner (Crofton, Md./DeMatha) recently became the third Retriever in school history to amass 60 caused turnovers and now has 62.

  • Freshman attackman Josh Tang (Crofton, Md./Archbishop Spalding) could step into a prominent role in 2022. Inside Lacrosse unveiled its Power 100 Incoming Freshman Rankings for the Class of 2022 and Tang earned the No. 82 spot amongst the nation's elite first-year players.

  • Fresh off winning its first-ever America East men's lacrosse title in 2021, Vermont is the preseason favorite to top the standings in 2022. The Retrievers were picked fourth, by just two points behind second-place Stony Brook. UMBC received the only first place vote which did not go to the Catamounts.

  • UMBC suffered heavy losses on its attack unit, with fifth-years Ryan Frawley and Brett McIntyre and senior Trevor Patschorke earning degrees. The trio combined for 291 points during their tenures on Hilltop Circle.

  • Ryan Moran enters his sixth season at the helm of the Retrievers. He earned America East Conference Coach of the Year honors in 2021 after leading the squad to a share of the regular season title. He has led the Retrievers to the league playoffs in four of the five full years of competition. As the No. 4 seed, Moran piloted the 2019 team to an America East title and a NCAA Tournament win over Marist.  Moran is 33-34 overall and 17-13 in America East play.

  • Nick Griffin, UMBC '21, has joined the coaching staff as a volunteer assistant. Griffin has been a member of the Retriever men's lacrosse program since the fall of 2016. As a sophomore in the spring of 2018, the defenseman became the first UMBC men's lacrosse NCAA Division I student-athlete tabbed to the Google Cloud Academic All-American team. Griffin was named the team's captain in both 2020 and 2021. Griffin joins Joe Bucci and Craig Chick on the UMBC sidelines this season.

A GLANCE AT THE RIVER HAWKS
  • UMass Lowell is 1-9 on the season and the River Hawks have lost their last two outings. UML's win occurred at NJIT on March 26, as they held off the host Highlanders, 8-7. Jake Davis scored three goals in the triumph. The following week, Conor Foley scored four times as UML nearly pulled off an upset, falling, 13-12, to UAlbany.
  • UMass Lowell lost, 23-9, versus Vermont on April 9.
  • Foley is second in America East with 2.6 goals per game (26 in 10 games) and fourth in points per game (3.3). He leads the league, attempting 10.3 shots per contest.
  • The River Hawks are scoring 9.9 goals per game and allowing a league-worst 16.0 goals against per contest.
SERIES HISTORY
  • UMBC snapped a two-game slide to UML by virtue of a 12-7 Senior Day victory last April 17. The Retrievers built a 5-1 lead and did not allow the River Hawks within a three-goal margin the rest of the way. UMBC's special teams excelled, as the man-up unit converted on 2-of-3 chances and the man-down unit killed off all five UML opportunities.
  • UMBC leads the series, 4-2. They have not played at Cushing Field since a 10-7 loss there in 2018. In the only other meeting in Lowell, the Retrievers escaped with a 9-8 overtime victory in 2016.
UP NEXT

UMBC completes the regular season with two home games in seven days. The Retrievers welcome Stony Brook to Retriever Soccer Park on Saturday, April 23 and a noon opening face-off is on tap.
