Women’s Lacrosse Falls at No. 20 Johns Hopkins, 17-6, on Tuesday

UMBC women’s lacrosse saw their three-game win streak snapped with a 17-6 loss against the nationally ranked Blue Jays on Tuesday afternoon.

BALTIMORE– UMBC women's lacrosse saw their three-game win streak snapped with a 17-6 loss against the nationally ranked Blue Jays on Tuesday afternoon. The Blue Jays used a big second quarter to take control of the game.

The Retrievers fall to 6-4 on the year while JHU improves to 6-5.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Johns Hopkins broke through first with an early goal after forcing UMBC into early turnovers.
  • Dymin Gerow (Baltimore, Md./Episcopal) got UMBC on the board, picking up a rebound and putting it home to tie it at 1-1.
  • However the Blue Jays answered just seconds later to retake the lead, and scored three straight to make it 4-1.
  • Kolby Weedon (Catonsville, Md./Catonsville) ended the drought after winning the draw and getting around the defense for her 28th goal of the year to cut it to 4-2.
  • UMBC struggled for most of the second quarter, but made it a 5-3 game after Megan Halczuk (Fawn Grove, Pa.) scored a backhanded goal from Claire Bockstie (Forest Hill, Md./Maryvale Prep). 
  • However the Blue Jays would end the half with four straight to take a 9-3 lead at the break.
  • After the Blue Jays opened up a nine-goal advantage, Gerow struck with her second of the game to make it 12-4 with five minutes left in the third.
  • The Blue Jays would lead by as many as 11 in the second half, defeating the Retrievers 17-6 on Tuesday.

NOTABLE:
  • Gerow led the way with two goals on seven shots. 
  • Halczuk, Weedon, Ria Lagdameo (Upper Marlboro, Md./St. Mary's), and Jenna McDermott (Westminster, Md./South Carroll) also added goals for the Retrievers.
  • Lexi Roberts (Baldwin, Md./Fallston) recorded 16 saves on the day.

UMBC will open America East play on Saturday, April 2 on the road at UMass Lowell. Opening draw with the River Hawks is slated for 12 p.m.
