BALTIMORE -- The UMBC Baseball team improved its winning streak to four games with an 11-5 victory over visiting Navy on a chilly Tuesday night at Alumni Field.
The trio of
Myles Nicholson (Hagerstown, Md.),
Ian Diaz (Philadelphia, Pa.) and
Luke Johnson (Lewes, Del.)Â combined for seven hits, eight runs scored and five stolen bases.
Diaz led the way for UMBC (12-12, 4-2 AE), going 3-for-4 with two RBI, three runs scored and two stolen bases, while Nicholson finished 2-for-4 with three runs scored, three stolen bases and an RBI. Johnson went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and a two-run homer, his second of the season.
Adam Schwartz (Akron, Pa.) got the win to improve to 1-1 on the season after pitching a scoreless inning of relief.
Joe Pucek (Morristown, N.J.) started on the mound and went four innings, allowing just one run.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Retrievers took a 2-0 lead in the second after an error extended the inning and Matt Ryan (Bethesda, Md.) blooped a double down the right field line to score Justin Taylor (Reston, Va) and Johnson
- Nicholson put UMBCÂ up 3-0 in the third all on his own after he beat out an infield single, stole second and moved to third on an errant throw from the catcher and then scored on a wild pitch
- Three batters later, Johnson blasted the first pitch he saw for a two-out two-run homer to make it 5-0 Retrievers
- Navy (10-15) would get a run back in the top of the fourth, but UMBC answered in the bottom half of the inning when Drew Roberts doubled home Connor Kelly (Cumberland, Md.).
- The lead grew to 7-1 in the fifth when Diaz singled home Nicholson
- The Midshipmen cut he lead to 7-4 with a three run seventh, but a Luke Trythall (Poolesville, Md.) sacrifice fly that scored Diaz in the bottom of the seventh pushed the lead back to 8-4
- The Retrievers would add three more runs in the eighth on RBI singles from Nicholson, Diaz and Trythall
- Navy would get a run back in the ninth on an error, but that would be all they could muster
UMBC welcomes America East Division A leader Maine (7-13, 4-2 AE) to Alumni Field for a three-game series beginning on Friday night.
