Retrievers Sweep Weekly Awards; Women’s Lacrosse Closes Out Non-Conference Play at #20 Johns Hopkins on Tuesday

UMBC women’s lacrosse will take their three-game win streak to historic Homewood Field on Tuesday for a showdown with the nationally ranked Blue Jays. UMBC is coming off a hard fought 14-11 win against Delaware last Wednesday. Lexi Roberts (Baldwin, Md./Fallston) had a career-high 20 saves in the contest.

BALTIMORE– UMBC women's lacrosse will take their three-game win streak to historic Homewood Field on Tuesday for a showdown with the nationally ranked Blue Jays. UMBC is coming off a hard fought 14-11 win against Delaware last Wednesday. Lexi Roberts (Baldwin, Md./Fallston) had a career-high 20 saves in the contest. 

Roberts, Claire Bockstie (Forest Hill, Md./Maryvale Prep), and Kolby Weedon (Catonsville, Md./Catonsville) earned #AEWLAX Weekly Awards, being named Defensive Player, Offensive Player and Rookie of the Week respectively.

Scouting the Retrievers:
  • The Retrievers are in the midst of a three-game win streak and are 6-3 on the year heading into their final non-conference game. Most recently the Retrievers defeated Delaware 14-11 in Newark last Wednesday. Lexi Roberts made 20 saves in the win.
  • Claire Bockstie (Forest Hill, Md./Maryvale Prep) leads the Retrievers with 41 goals and 12 assists for 53 points. Dymin Gerow (Baltimore, Md./Episcopal) is also over 30 goals with 32 and eight assists. 
  • Kolby Weedon (Catonsville, Md./Catonsville) and Megan Halczuk (Fawn Grove, Pa.) have chipped in 27 and 13 goals respectively with Halczuk collecting 53 draw controls.
  • Roberts has been the leader in net with a 4-3 record making 60 saves (.508 pct) while giving up 58 goals (10.77 GAA).

Scouting the Blue Jays:
  • No. 20 Johns Hopkins comes into the contest at 5-5 on the year after dropping a heartbreaking 12-11 game against No. 13 Rutgers on Saturday. The Scarlet Knights scored the game winner with six seconds left. 
  • The Blue Jays have five different players with double digit goals led by Shelby Harrison with 23 goals for 23 points. Georgia Esmond has added 10 goals and a team-best 16 assists to lead the way with 26 points.
  • Kathleen Garvey has seen the majority of time in net, sporting a 5-4 record. Garvey has made 70 saves (.419 pct) while allowing 97 goals (9.89 GAA) in ten games.

All-Time Series:
  • This will be the 33rd all-time meeting between the two schools and will be the first time since 2019 the two will play.
  • The Blue Jays took that matchup 17-7 at Homewood Field. The last UMBC win was a 7-6 victory in 2012.

Milestone Watch:
  • Bockstie is closing in on 100 career goals, needing just six to achieve the mark. 
  • Dymin Gerow and Olivia Docal (Glenwood, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel) are approaching 100 career points with Gerow needing 28 and Docal needing 30.

Among the Best:
  • The Retrievers are right up there among the nation's best in several statistical categories. The Retrievers are second in saves percentage and are 24th in ground balls per game.
  • UMBC is eighth in the nation in scoring offense.
  • Bockstie is second in shots on goal per game and first in shots per game. Bockstie is also fourth in the country in goals per game. Gerow is also ranked third in free position goals per game.

  • The Retrievers will open America East play against UMass Lowell on Saturday, April 2.
  • Opening draw up in Lowell is set for 12 p.m. on America East TV.
