HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Retrievers got on the board first as Kevin Doughty scored an unassisted tally 1:41 into the game.
- But Binghamton responded with the final two goals of the first quarter and extended the lead to 4-1 just 2:42 into the second period.
- UMBC snapped a scoring drought of 18:19 as Kevin Doughty finished a feed from Dane Hall at the 10:00 minute mark of the period.
- The Bearcats again responded with a pair of goals before UMBC tried to change momentum late in the half. Graduate student attackman Brett Baucia picked off a BU clearing pass and fed Matt Holland, who beat the goalkeeper one-on-one for his first career goal with 1:42 remaining in the half.
- UMBC trailed, 6-3, at intermission, but the Bearcats gave themselves a comfortable margin by scoring the first four goals of the third quarter. Senior midfielder Taylor Bohanan halted the run with a man-up goal with 5:06 to play in the period and Baucia added a goal with 84 seconds remaining in the period to close the gap to 10-5 after 45 minutes.
- Senior Jack Thomas and Baucia (man-up) scored in a 30-second span early in the fourth quarter, and when Mike Doughty found Baucia in front for a goal, the Retrievers were with 10-8 with plenty of time remaining.
- Baucia had a shot saved at the 6:55 mark, but the Retrievers committed four of their 19 turnovers after that point and Binghamton took advantage at the 12:05 and 12:53 marks to end UMBC's comeback hopes.
Fifth-year senior goalkeeper
Tommy Lingner (Fort Salonga, N.Y.) made 10 saves, as the Retrievers were outshot, 38-27. The Retriever special teams units excelled, scoring twice on four attempts, while denying Binghamton on their two opportunities. But Binghamton cleared the ball ten more times (23-13) than the Retrievers, allowing them the enhanced number of scoring opportunities.
UMBC heads back on the road next weekend, taking on defending America East champion Vermont in Burlington.
