BALTIMORE – UMBC women's lacrosse (4-3) scored the game's final 12 goals as the Retrievers defeated Bucknell (3-3), 20-5, in a game played at UMBC Stadium.
The contest was originally scheduled for Lewisburg, Pa. on Saturday, but was moved to the turf at UMBC.
UMBC junior attacker
Claire Bockstie (Forest Hill, Md./Maryvale Prep) led the way with four goals and one assist, while sophomore linemate
Dymin Gerow (Baltimore, Md.) added four goals. Junior midfielder
Megan Halczuk (Fawn Grove, Pa.) and freshman attacker
Kolby Weedon (Catonsville, Md./Catonsville) each posted hat tricks, while junior middie
Jenna McDermott (Westminster, Md./South Carroll) contributed a goal and three assists.
The Retrievers led, 8-4, at halftime and the Bison scored 37 seconds into the third quarter to trim the gap to 8-5. But Weedon, McDermott and Gerow scored in a span of 104 seconds to boost the lead to 11-5 and the hosts never looked back.
Graduate student goalkeeper
Lexi Roberts (Baldwin, Md./Fallston) got the win, making five saves, while allowing four first half goals. Sophomore
Isabella Fontana (Chevy Chase, Md.) stopped the final six Bison shots on goal of the day after allowing BU's early second half tally.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Bucknell scored the game's first goal just 58 seconds into the action, but a pair of Bockstie goals in a 3-0 run gave the Retrievers the lead for good.
- The first quarter closed at 3-2, but Bockstie completed her hat trick added her fourth goal early 2:21 into the second period to extend UMBC's lead to 5-2. Gerow tallied twice in the second period to help UMBC attain the four-goal halftime cushion.
- UMBC outscored BU, 8-1, in the third quarter and 4-0 in the fourth to snap a two-game skid.
Sophomore
Lillian Begley (Gaithersburg, Md.) scored her first goal of the season and added an assist in the second half, while freshman
Katana Nelson (Hummelstown, Pa.) netted her first collegiate goal in the final quarter.
UMBC won 18 of 27 draw controls and Halczuk garnered seven DC's, Bockstie converted on 3-of-4 free position shots and now has 99 points in 25 career contests.
The Retrievers host Robert Morris on Saturday, March 19. The game is set for a noon opening draw at Retriever Soccer Park.
