BALTIMORE – The UMBC women's lacrosse team scored the game's first nine goals and cruised to an opening 21-3 victory over Longwood in the first women's lacrosse game played on the Bermuda grass of Retriever Soccer Park..
Sophomore
Dymin Gerow (Baltimore, Md./Episcopal) led the way with six goals and an assist for the Retrievers. In her UMBC debut, sophomore
Kolby Weedon (Catonsville, Md./Catonsville) scored four goals and added an assist, while junior
Claire Bockstie (Forest Hill, Md./Maryvale Prep) added three goals and a helper.
The Retrievers led, 7-0, after 15 minutes, 14-2 at the half and 17-2, after three quarters.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Weedon scored her first goal in the black and gold just 10 seconds into the game. After Bockstie and Gerow got on the board at the 2:27 and 9:17 marks, UMBC's next six goals were scored on free position attempts.
- UMBC held the Lancers off the board until the 2:09 mark of the second quarter.
- Longwood scored back-to-back goals before the Retrievers tallied the next 12 of the game, holding the visitors scoreless for 39 minutes.
Sophomore
Mary Ellis (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and junior
Megan Halczuk (Fawn Grove, Pa.) each scored twice for UMBC. Ellis, who hit the nets for the first time as a Retriever, added an assist, while Halczuk helped UMBC dominate the circle by recording nine draw controls.
Freshmen
Ria Lagdameo (Upper Marlboro, Md./St. Mary's) and
Alexis Abe (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck) scored goals in their debuts.
Graduate student
Lexi Roberts (Baldwin, Md./Fallston) (2 saves, 2 ga) and sophomore
Isabella Fontana (Chevy Chase, Md.) (3 saves, 1 ga) each played a half for UMBC.
UMBC is back in action on Wednesday, Feb. 16 when they face Mount St. Mary's in Emmitsburg (3:00 p.m.).
