Lowell, Mass.-- UMBC men's basketball saw their six game win streak come to an end in an 88-71 loss to UMass Lowell on Saturday night. Senior Keondre Kennedy (Atlanta, Ga.) had a game-high 19 points with six rebounds in the loss.

The Retrievers fall to 12-11, 7-5 AE on the year while the River Hawks improve to 13-11, 5-7 AE.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Retrievers would get out to a quick 4-0 lead off buckets from Nathan Johnson (Adel, Iowa) and Yaw Obeng-Mensah (Toronto, Ontario).
  • Darnell Rogers (Baltimore, Md./Indian Land (SC)/New Mexico JC) would hit a three to push the advantage to 9-5 after UMass Lowell responded to the opening run.
  • The River Hawks would hold the Retrievers scoreless over the next two minutes to take their first lead of the game. However, that would not last long, as a Szymon Wojcik (Wroclaw, Poland) three and one tied it up.
  • That would spark the offense for both teams, as the two sides traded buckets, going just about five minutes on non-stop play.
  • UMBC would get out to their largest lead of the half, 37-30 after Rogers found Obeng-Mensah for an and one at the under four timeout.
  • The River Hawks would throw the final punch of the half, cutting the Retriever lead to 39-36 at the break
  • L.J. Owens (Annapolis, Md./Severn School/William & Mary) and Keondre Kennedy each had seven points in the opening half as UMBC shot over 50 percent from the floor, and 6-7 (85.5 percent) from three.
  • The River Hawks came out in the second half and battled to take the lead back early on.
  • Kennedy would answer that run with a transition three to retake the lead.
  • However an 11-0 River Hawk run would put them in front by double digits to force a UMBC timeout.
  • That run would be all UMass Lowell would need, leading by as many as 18 in the second half in an 88-71 win.

NOTABLE:
  • Kennedy finished with 19 points on 7-11 shooting with six rebounds.
  • Owens and Wojcik each had 11 points with Obeng-Mensah grabbing a team-best eight rebounds.
  • UMBC shot over 50 percent from the floor in the contest.

UMBC will continue their three game in a five day stretch at New Hampshire on Monday, Feb. 14. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m.
