Men's Hoops Extend Win Streak to Six; Take Care of William & Mary, 78-62

Box Score BALTIMORE – UMBC extended its winning streak to six as the Retrievers surged past William & Mary, 78-62, at "The Peake" on Sunday afternoon.

The Retrievers improved to 9-4 on the campaign, while the Tribe slipped to 4-8.

Senior guard Jacob Boonyasith led a balanced attack with 19 points, including 7-of-7 from the charity stripe. Graduate student guard Colton Lawrence scored 12 of his 14 points in the first half, while freshman guard Dion Brown posted double figures for the second consecutive game with a dozen points on 6-of-7 shooting.  

The Retrievers finished the game on a 17-6 run to extend their home winning streak to five.

Noah Collier led the Tribe with 14 points. 

HOW IT HAPPENED- FIRST HALF
·       William & Mary took an early 7-0 lead but Lawrence scored the first 10 points in an 18-6 run which gave the hosts an 18-13 lead at the 10:54 mark of the half.
·       The Retrievers misfired on their first four shots, then hit 13-of-17 and would build the lead to as many as 13 points at 33-20 at the 5:30 mark of the period.
·       The Tribe went on a late 9-2 run to cut their deficit to 35-29, but Boonyasith sparked a 8-2 response to end the half with three free throws and a long range trey.
·       UMBC led, 43-31, at the break, hitting 17-of-28 (60.7 percent) shots from the floor.

HOW IT HAPPENED- SECOND HALF
·       The Tribe gradually whittled the lead and came within 54-50 at the 11:32 mark as UMBC cooled off substantially from the floor.
·       W&M was within 61-56 at the 6:36 mark, before a defensively-sparked 8-1 Retriever run extended the lead to 69-57 with four minutes remaining. Tra'Von Fagan had a theft and a block to trigger the surge.

STATISTICALLY SPEAKING
·       UMBC hit 30-of-56 shots from the floor (53.6 percent) and held the to Tribe to 41.1 percent shooting.
·       The Retrievers put the game away by knocking down 8-of-10 second half free throws and were 13-of-15 for the game.
·       UMBC committed only seven turnovers and the Tribe only scored four points off UMBC's miscues.
·       Brown has converted 15-of-22 field goal attempts in two games this week, averaging 16.5 points per game in the wins over Loyola-Md. and William & Mary.

NOTES
·       UMBC has now scored 70 or more points in 10 straight games, the first time they have accomplished the feat since the 2000-2001 season.
·       The Retrievers picked up their first ever win against the Tribe after dropping the first two decisions.

UMBC travels to College Park, Md. for a date versus Maryland on Thursday, Dec. 29. Tip-off time is set for 7:00 p.m.
