Box Score BALTIMORE – The UMBC women's soccer team had their season come to an end after falling to the Binghamton Bearcats, 5-0, in their America East finale on Thursday evening at Retriever Soccer Park.
The Retrievers finished at 5-8-4 overall and 1-5-2 in the conference while the visitors improved to 9-5-3 (6-1-1, AE) and won the regular-season title with 19 points. A victory would have given the hosts the sixth and final berth in the upcoming conference championships.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Retrievers played shorthanded for nearly the entire contest as junior forward Meghan McKye (Toronto, Ontario, Canada, Northern Secondary School) was red-carded just 2:12 into the contest for violent behavior.
- Binghamton went on to score four first-half goals and never looked back.
- The Bearcats scored the only goal they would need in the 16' when junior midfielder Victoria McKnight pounced on a rebound off her own initial shot and scored from point-blank range.
- Freshman defender Brooke Herber followed up ten minutes later as she collected a deflection off a UMBC defender and knocked the ball into the upper right corner from a few yards out.
- The visitors made it 3-0 in the 33' as sophomore midfielder Hannah Knych directed the ball over the goal line after senior midfielder Olivia McKnight banged an initial shot of the near post.
- Junior defender Emma Colling gave the Bearcats a 4-0 advantage just before halftime following a corner kick. Knych settled a loose ball and tapped a pass back to the center of the box for Colling, who struck a winner from seven yards out.
- Binghamton scored an unassisted goal in the 82' on a 25-yard blast by sophomore striker Peyton Gilmore.
