BALTIMORE - The UMBC women's and men's swimming and diving teams head to Annapolis to take on the United States Naval Academy squads on Saturday, Oct. 23. The meets get underway from Lejeune Hall at 11:00 a.m. and live results will be available through the Meet Mobile app.
The meet was originally scheduled as UMBC's home opener, but ongoing hot water repairs to buildings on the UMBC campus have necessitated the change of venue.
Four Retrievers earned first place finishes as the UMBC women's swimming and diving team took part in the NJIT Invitational last Friday and Saturday at the Fitness and Wellness Center.
On Friday, junior Borka Tomanova captured her first UMBC gold, winning the 100 backstroke with a mark of 57.72, edging teammate graduate student
Caroline Sargent, who posted 57.98.
Later, junior
Makaela Hill sprinted her way to a victory in the 50 freestyle, besting the other 26 competitors in the race with a time of 24.42.
On Saturday, freshmen diver
Alicia Buteau kicked off the competition by triumphing in the 3-meter diving event. She amassed 203.45, best among divers from UMBC, Vermont and St. Francis Brooklyn. For her efforts, Buteau earned America East Diver of the Week honors in the league's first week of the awards.
Sargent earned her first gold of the 2022-23 campaign by capturing the 200 yard backstroke. She bested teammate
Nyah Stahl by 1.1 seconds with a time of 2:06.75.
UMBC and Navy meet on an annual basis, including last year in Annapolis. Hill posted a mark of 53.45 in the 100 freestyle and earned a silver for the Retrievers as Navy triumphed, 177-105.
The Retrievers return to action when they face Towson at Burdick Hall on Saturday, Nov. 5.
