Women's Soccer Falls to Veteran Binghamton Squad

Box Score

Video Highlights

Vestal, N.Y. – UMBC freshman midfielder Izzy BInko (Selbyville, Del.) scored her first collegiate goal to knot the score early in the second half, but host Binghamton responded three times and defeated the Retrievers, 4-1, at the Bearcats Sports Complex.

The Retrievers have dropped back-to-back games for the first time this season and fell to 4-4-2 overall and 1-2-0 in America East.  A veteran Binghamton team improved to 6-5-1, 2-1-0 and won for the fourth time in five home contests.

"A lot of positives to take away from today," said head coach Vanessa Mann. "I thought we were the more complete team on the park but when you struggle to manage the physicality of what the game presents, opportunities arise for the opponent to take advantage. This game gives us a lot of positives to take into UMass-Lowell on Sunday."

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • UMBC earned a few counterattacking opportunities in the first half, but generally played the first 45 minutes in their own half of the field. The Bearcats opened the scoring in the 35' on a crisp finish by Stefania Piantadosi.
  • But the Retrievers picked up the aggressiveness as the second half began. In the 52'. Binko won a ball 45 yards from the goal on the left sideline, drove by a pair of Bearcats defenders and hit the far right corner of the net from 16 yards out on the edge of the box.
  • The Bearcats came right back and over the next few minutes, peppered UMBC goalkeeper Isy Davy (Bungenbore, NSW, Australia) five shots and the freshman turned aside a pair. But in the 66', Binghamton's Victoria McKnight ran onto a ball in the center of the field and finished to put the hosts ahead.
  • After a couple of spills by both teams in the UMBC box, Binghamton was awarded a penalty kick in the 70' and Lexi Vegoda converted.
  • Binghamton finished the scoring by converting off a corner in the 87'.

NOTABLE

  • Binko, who had a pair of assists coming into the game and tested goalkeepers with 10 shots on goal, made her 11th shot on goal count.
  • Davy, who missed several weeks due to injury, made her first appearance since starting the opener versus Robert Morris.
