Women's Soccer Prepares to Battle Binghamton in the Empire State on Thursday Evening

The UMBC women's soccer team (4-3-2, 1-1-0 America East) heads to New York to take on the Binghamton Bearcats (5-5-1, 1-1-0) on Thursday, Sept. 30. The match gets underway at 6:00 p.m. on the turf of the Bearcats Sports Complex and will be broadcast on ESPN3.

 

The Retrievers' two-game winning and shutout streak came to an end on Sunday, as UMBC fell to Hartford, 2-0, at Retriever Soccer Park. The Hawks scored a pair of second half goals as the Retrievers suffered just their second shutout loss of the season.  

 

HONORED:

  • Freshman defender Lauren Reid (Denver, Colo.) earned America East Conference Defender of the Week honros on Sept. 19.
  • Freshman goalkeeper Abbey Cowles (Colts Neck, N.J.) earned America East Conference Defender of the Week and co-Rookie of the Week honors for games ending Sept. 12.
  • Junior forward Juliana Rafaniello (Old Bridge, N.J.) took home the first America East Conference Offensive Player of the Week honor after Week 1 of the campaign.

 

NOTABLE:

  • Rafaniello leads the squad with four goals and nine total points. She has netted the game-winning goal in three of four Retriever wins this season and leads is tied for second in America East in GWG per game.
  • Junior midfielder Carolyn Koutsos (Boyds, Md./Good Counsel) has added three goals for UMBC and is third in the league with 1.56 shots on goal per game.
  • Sophomore midfielder Grace Harvey (Gaithersburg, Md./Gaithersburg), who notched the GWG at Maine, has scored twice for the Retrievers this fall.
  • Junior goalkeeper Morgan McGruder (Overland Park, Kan.), who is one of three netminders to earn a start this season, is second in the conference with 6.33 saves per game.
  • Graduate student Erin Stevenson (Sellersville, Pa.) is slated to play in her fifth regular season game versus the Bearcats

 

A GLANCE AT THE BEARCATS:

  • Binghamton just had its three-match winning streak snapped and fell to 5-5-1, 1-1-0 AE with a 1-0 overtime loss at UMass Lowell on Sunday.
  • The Bearcats opened America East Conference play with a 1-0 double-OT win vs. Vermont. Junior forward Maya Anand scored her team-leading sixth goal of the season in the 103'.
  • Anand is currently tied for the top spot in America East with her six goals and leads the league with four game-winning goals.
  • Binghamton is 3-1-0 at home this season.
  • Junior midfielder Olivia McKnight, who scored twice in a 3-1 win over Cornell, has four goals on the campaign.

 

SERIES NOTES:

  • UMBC and Binghamton will meet for the 20th time and the Bearcats hold a 15-2-2 series advantage.
  • Binghamton has won four straight, dating back to a 3-1 UMBC victory in 2016.
  • In the spring, the Retrievers fought a tremendous battle on Senior Day before falling, 1-0, in overtime.

 

UP NEXT:

UMBC plays its final non-conference contest of the season when they travel to Delaware State for a Thursday, Oct. 6 contest versus the Hornets. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
