Women's Soccer Drops a 2-0 Decision to Visiting Delaware

BALTIMORE – Visiting Delaware (2-3-0) scored early in the second half, withstood a UMBC (1-1-1) challenge and tallied again in the closing moments in the Blue Hens' 2-0 victory in ideal conditions at Retriever Soccer Park.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Delaware controlled the first 20 minutes of play, but UMBC responded and carried the play in the final 25 and the game went to intermission scoreless.
  • UD took advantage of a UMBC turnover and made a pair of passes from the right wing and right side of the box to Sara D'Appolonia, who scored  her second goal of the season in the 56'.
  • Moments later, the Retrievers responded and had numbers moving forward, but could not make a final pass before Delaware committed a foul 35 yards out and thwarted the UMBC chance.
  • With the Retrievers pressing, D'Appolonia sent a through ball to Sydni Wright, who added an insurance marker in the 83'.

STAT CHECK AND OTHER NOTES

  • Making her first start at home and the second of her career, junior Morgan McGruder (Overland Park, Kan.) made four saves in 90 minutes of action.
  • Graduate student midfielder Erin Stevenson (Sellersville, Pa.) started her 60th consecutive game and has played in all 60 UMBC contests since 2017.
  • Delaware outshot UMBC, 12-6 and attempted five of the game's seven corners.
