Men's Soccer Blanks Hartford, 3-0, on America East Opening Weekend

Box Score

Video Highlights | Postgame Interviews

BALTIMORE – UMBC scored three times in the first 25 minutes of play and held off Hartford, 3-0, in the America East opener for both squads.

The Retrievers improved to 4-2-1 overall, while Hartford fell to 1-4-2.

UMBC sophomore forward Taylor Calheira (Towson, Md./Concordia Prep) continued his red-hot week by scoring the game's first goal and assisting on the two insurance goals. He registered three goals and two assists on the week.

"I have mixed feelings," said head coach Pete Caringi, Jr. "I am obviously excited that we won and I thought we played some of our best soccer early on, but we kind of let down. Give them (Hartford) credit, they're a well-coached team, they continued to fight, continued to play, but I just think we can play better."

UMBC sophomore goalkeeper Jailon Gillespie (Laurel, Del.) made a pair of saves to record his first career shutout and the Retrievers' first clean sheet of the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • After several quick touches by UMBC, Calheira and junior midfielder Ryan Becher (Hummelstown, Pa.) worked a textbook give-and-go with Calheira finishing from nine yards out in the 8'.
  • Calheira initiated the second goal, feeding sophomore midfielder Tyler Harry (Baltimore, Md./Archbishop Curley) on the left edge of the box. Harry's one touch pass found onrushing defender Julian Conze (Telgte, Germany), whose left-footed shot beat UH goalkeeper Rotem Fadida and settled inside the far right post from 11 yards away. That goal occurred in the 15'.
  • It was Harry who drew a secondary assist on the third goal in the 25'. His deep cross from left to right was midhit by Calheira, but junior forward Justin John-Langba (Bowie, Md./Bowie) got his left foot on the shot and re-directed it past Fadida from three yards out.
  • The Hawks would settle in and play UMBC on equal footing for the final 65', but could not produce high quality scoring chances as the Retrievers posted the shutout.

NOTABLE

  • UMBC has scored two or more goals in six of its seven games on the season and has scored the game's first goal in the last four outings.
  • Harry posted his first multiple-point game with two assists.
  • Three players – Becher (5-2-12), Calheira (4-4-12) and Conze (3-4-10) are already in double figures in scoring.
  • UMBC is 4-0-1 when Conze hits the scoreboard.

UMBC plays at Lehigh on Tuesday, Sept. 21 before resuming America East Conference play at UMass Lowell on Saturday, Sept. 25.
