Box Score Brookeville, N.Y. – UMBC led for nearly 60 minutes of play, but host Long Island University scored three second half goals and defeated the Retrievers, 3-1, at LIU Soccer Park.
Both teams are now 2-2-1 on the young season.
UMBC junior midfielder Ryan Becher (Hummelstown, Pa.) scored just 4:23 into the game, tallying his fifth goal of the season. Playing their first out-of-state game of the season, the Retrievers hung onto the advantage until the 62', when the hosts knotted the score, heading in a corner kick.
After a rare UMBC thrust was turned away, LIU countered and took the lead in the 81' and added an insurance goal just 82 seconds later.
Retriever sophomore goalkeeper Jailon Gillespie (Laurel, Del.) made his first career appearance, going all 90 minutes in the cage for UMBC and recording three saves.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- On the first UMBC surge of the game, a pressured LIU goalkeeper passed the ball between two defenders. Becher pounced on the mistake and quickly one-timed the ball into the net from 22 yards out.
- Despite being outshot, 6-2, the Retrievers took that 1-0 lead into intermission.
- But the Sharks would knot the game in the 62', as Emil Jaaskelainen re-directed a corner kick in, beating Gillespie to the near right post.
- UMBC freshman midfieler Ismailcan Usta (Frankenberg, Germany) had a quality chance, but his shot from just outside the box was saved. LIU countered and Ben Fall's chip from just outside the box on the left side soared over Gillespie and under the crossbar in the 81'.
- The Sharks scored an insurance goal just over a minute later, as Andre Puente headed in LIU's 13th corner of the match.
NOTABLE
- He was held off the scoreboard in the opener, but Becher has recorded at least one goal in the last four games.
