GAME DAY PROGRAM
The UMBC women's soccer team (1-0-1) welcomes Delaware (1-3-0) to campus for the first time since 2010 on Thursday, Sept. 2. The opening kick-off is slated for 7:00 p.m. at Retriever Soccer Park and the match will be broadcast on the America East digital network.
The Retrievers opened with a 3-1 home victory over Robert Morris on August 19 and did not see action again until this past Sunday, Aug. 29, when they played host Towson to a 1-1 double overtime draw. Graduate student Erin Stevenson (Sellersville, Pa.) gave UMBC a 1-0 lead just before halftime, but the Tigers drew even in the 70'. Junior goalkeeper Morgan Magruder (Overland Park, Kan.) made nine saves in her collegiate debut.
RETRIEVER WATCH:
- Stevenson needs one more goal to hit double figures in her career. If she starts on Thursday, it will be 60 consecutive starts in all of the Retrievers' 60 games since the fall of 2017.
NOTABLE:
- Junior Juliana Rafaniello's (Old Bridge, N.J.) two-goal game versus Robert Morris was UMBC's first since Christina Corbi netted a pair vs. UML in October, 2018. Her five-point game is the first since teammate Stevenson registered six with a hat trick versus UNH on Oct. 22, 2017.
- Junior Caroline Koutsos (Boyds, Md./Good Counsel) also scored her first career goal versus Robert Morris.
- UMBC 1-0-1 start matches their best since 2017 (also 1-0-1).
- Magruder's nine saves were the most since Jade Wilkines stopped 10 shots in a 2-1 win at Maine on Oct. 20, 2019.
A GLANCE AT THE BLUE HENS:
- After opening with a 2-1 victory over George Mason, Delaware has dropped three straight, falling to Villanova, 4-1, at Monmouth, 2-0 and versus Seton Hall, 1-0.
- Senior midfielder Sara D'Appolonia and junior striker Claudia Benz scored in the first 17:20 of play and Delaware held off Mason in the opener. The Blue Hens have been held off the board for 238 minutes, since junior forward Anna Diffendal scored in the 32' in the 4-1 loss to Villanova.
- The Blue Hens have outscored the opponents, 45-36, but have been outscored, 6-0, in second halves in 2021.
- Senior goalkeeper Laurne Krinsky has played all 360 minutes and has a save percentage of 52.9 and a goals against average of 2.00
SERIES NOTES:
- This will be the 16th meeting between the Blue Hens and the Retrievers, but the first since 2010 and second since 2004.
- Delaware has won three straight (2003, 2004, 2019) and leads the all-time series, 10-5. UMBC's last win was a 1-0 decision in Newark in 2002.
