Box Score College Park, Md. – The UMBC men's soccer team (0-1-1) produced a tremendous late rally, but came up just short, falling at Maryland (2-0), 4-3, at Ludwig Field.
Retriever junior midfielder Ryan Becher (Hummelstown, Pa.) scored a pair of goals in a span of 3:11 to cut a 4-1 deficit to 4-3 with just under five minutes remaining.
Sophomore midfielder William Forby (Vegle, Denmark) netted his first UMBC goal in the 19', equalizing the game at 1-1.
"I was very disappointed in the result and I was disappointed in our play overall," said Head Coach Pete Caringi, Jr. "I was really pleased with our comeback – the fact that we never quit on the field is a great sign. We have to play better, but we opened with two really tough opponents that I think will be in the NCAA Tournament. We just need to learn from it, grow from it and get better."
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Junior back Julian Conze (Telgte, Germany) cleared a shot directed to the goal off the line in 2'.
- Maryland would score in the 18', but Forby converted a pass from sophomore forward Taylor Calheira (Towson, Md./Concordia Prep) just 72 seconds later to knot the score at 1-1.
- The Terrapins – who received the 26th-most votes in the preseason United Soccer Coaches poll and just defeated No. 18 Charlotte, 1-0 on Thursday – scored in the 34' and 38' to take a 3-1 halftime lead.
- UMBC could not get much offense going in the early stages of the second half, but were awakened when Maryland went ahead 4-1 with 7:11 remaining on the clock.
- The Retrievers kicked off and Becher drilled a shot into the left corner of the goal – as 7:04 was illuminated on the clock.
- With 4:53 remaining, Becher converted sophomore Jago Lott's (Somerset, U.K.) corner kick to stun the hosts and home crowd at Ludwig.
- Calheira had a chance in the waning seconds, but could not get a shot underway and Maryland survived the rally.
