Women's Lacrosse Falls in Regular Season to Stony Brook, 18-7

STONY BROOK, N.Y. - In the regular-season finale to the 2021 season, the UMBC women's lacrosse team fell, 18-7, to the Stony Brook Seawolves at LaValle Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

 

During the game, sophomore Megan Halczuk (Fawn Grove, Pa.) had nine draw controls on the afternoon, breaking the single-season draw control record with 93. The previous record of 87 was set by Caitlin Miller in 2018.

 

The Retrievers finish the regular season at 6-5 overall and 5-4 in the America East; the team will either be the #3 or #4 seed in next week's America East Tournament. The Seawolves won their 10th straight game of the year to move to 12-2 and 8-0 in conference play. Stony Brook will be the #1 seed and host the conference tournament.

 

The Retrievers struck first in the contest, with Halczuk netting the game-opening goal with just 30 seconds off the clock off a pass from senior Lily Kennedy (Marriottsville, Md./Marriotts Ridge). 

 

The Seawolves scored the next two to take a 2-1 lead before Kennedy assisted on a goal by sophomore Claire Bockstie (Forest Hill, Md./Maryvale Preparatory) to tie the game up at 2-2 with 24:36 to play.


Stony Brook rattled off seven straight goals to take a 9-2 lead before senior Olivia Docal (Glenwood, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel) put an eight-meter shot into the back of the net with 3:13 to play in the first half.

 

The Seawolves finished the first period with two more goals to take a 11-3 lead.

 

Stony Brook continued where they left off in the second half, scoring two goals within the first two minutes of play to take a 13-3 lead.

 

After the Seawolves added their 14th goal, Bockstie got one back for the Retrievers with another free position shot to cut the lead to 14-4 with 24:13 to play.

 

Another three-goal spurt from the Seawolves gave them a 17-4 lead before Bockstie and Docal went back-to-back to stop the streak with 9:46 to play in the game. 

 

Stony Brook scored its final goal at the 7:59 mark in the second half, but Kennedy netted a free position goal with 34 seconds on the clock for th 18-7 final.

 

Senior goalkeeper Lexi Roberts (Baldwin, Md./Fallston/Army West Point) made 14 saves inside the cage, two shy of her career-high set in the 2020 season. 

 

Senior Taryn Ohlmiller led all scorers with nine points (8g, 1a), while Kameron Hallsall and Hayler Hunt split time in the net to combine for five saves.
